There Was A ManA Poem by Nathanael LockefordThere was a man that lied. Why did he lie? Because the truth was to easy and he liked things to be complicated. He thought that if his life was complicated then he was truly living. He was wrong. Or was he? He didn't know. Doesn't know. Maybe he will never know. There was a man who was still a boy. He told everyone he had grown up. He told everyone he would never grow up. The man wanted everything to be simple like when he was young. He wanted to believe that the world wasn't complicated but it was. There was a man who didn't know who he was. He tried really hard not to think about it. He was afraid that if he asked who he was he wouldn't like the answer. Who was he now? Who did he used to be? Who would he become? Those are scary questions to ask. There was a man who wanted to be someone else. Anyone else. Everyone else in the world seemed to have an answer that he didn't have. Anyone else could easily tell him what they thought he was like. They were wrong. There was a man who was evil and good at the same time. He had a tattoo that was significant and false. Inside of him was a closed door. The door hid the secret to the evil and the good. People looked through the window in the door and said that there was good inside. The man felt something else. He kept the door closed and nobody knows what is truly inside. There was a man that could do anything but didn't. Why didn't he do anything? Well he did. He just didn't do anything that had meaning. He existed. He did not live. There was a man who was. That was all. There was nothing more to him than his being. He hated that. He was afraid of changing. There was a man who would not change. He could not change. If he changed he would cease to be. There was a man who wrote about himself. He wanted to delete it but knew he should not. He stared at his writing and pondered. He couldn't bring himself to read it yet. The man sent it to others to read. They would tell him what he wanted to hear. And what he did not. There was a man.
