The Days I Remember

The Days I Remember

A Poem by Nathanael Lockeford

56.          We had so much fun, just walking and talking, going fishing and catching nothing, I remember the laughter that came from you, so loud and full and just complete. It was my favorite thing to hear.

47.          A cough here and there, nothing to worry about, you still laugh and I still love it. We do nothing but sit  and talk about the most random things. I would love to do it again.

32.          Just over a month left but who am I to know, you always get sick but it always gets better. Just because you’re stuck in the tent doesn’t mean we can’t have fun. Reading to you made your day and mine.

13.          Something can’t be right; you should have been better weeks ago. I’m starting to worry now, but what can I do, I’m only a kid…

5.            I’m scared… I’m feeding you the last of our canned chicken soup and its cold and I can’t do anything about it….

2.            Mom shows up and screams at me… I didn’t know how to contact her; we’re in the middle of nowhere, a camping trip gone wrong… One month turned to two and she knew something was wrong.

1.            The hospital smells funny, especially after being away from civilization for so long… I’m not feeling well but why worry about me when my grandfather might not last the night…..

0.            Gone… Empty… The only person who cared about me and you left me. How could you?! How could you….. What can I do now? There is nothing left for me…. Nothing at all, you’re gone and I have to carry on……. Please, please, please let it be a dream, a nightmare….. Let me wake up! Let me wake up! This is life, and I must live every day remembering that I let you die.

Grandpa I love you.

 I’ll be with you soon.

This is very well written and carries very strong imagery. The count down aspect of it is very effective as well. If it is based on a true situation I am very sorry for your loss. Know that it is not your fault. You didn't "let" anyone die. The end of this is very disconcerting. Saying that you will be with your Grandfather "soon" seems to imply that you may take your own life. I hope that is not the case. There is a song by the Avett Brothers called "Murder in the City":

I think it might be very healing for you. Two lines in it in particular stand out: "One person dead from such is plenty". And "Always remember there was nothing worth sharing like the love that let us share our name."
