chapter1 it was after her whatever it was, it was pursuing her swift and fast and she was weakening, tiring her muscles aching, she tripped and got up still running blindly. Running her hand flaying ahead of her trying to feel her way through pushing against branches, whipping her face she sensed the darkness closing in around her and it terrified, terrified her almost to a standstill but she didn’t give in still running her hair flaying behind her. Her mistake was looking to see if the creature was still at her heel and she tripped and fell and the creature shape shifted to a man and then back to the creature and came for her long sharp claws reaching for her, eyes yellow which had all the evil in it and then it pounced on her baring sharp fangs drooling with saliva she let out a piercing scream. She woke with a start, her chest heaving her heart racing she was visibly shaking she was soaked to the skin with sweat she ran her hand over her now sleep tousled hair, she looked at her bed side clock it was five am, she climbed out of bed padded softly across her room to the bathroom washed her face she looked at the mirror she sucked in a sharp breath she looked like she just faced the devil himself her eyes looked haunted she heaved a sigh nothing much she could do about her appearance she brushed her unruly curls set the brush down and changed into a fresh night gown she went into the kitchen made herself a cool glass of milk and sipped it, it wasn’t the first time she had such soul shattering nightmare she closed her eyes she still could envision the evil creature pouncing on her baring its fangs in a menacing evil grin what terrified her the most was its eyes it was pure evil and human, yes definitely human she didn’t know why she was having such horrid nightmares she’d had them every night for the last two month she thought she would have gotten used to it that after all she’d had the dream every night for the last two month telling herself each night before going to bed that it was a figment of her imagination and they were no such things as demons at least non she knew of residing on this earth but the truth of the matter was that the dream never failed to terrify her to haunt her she drained the rest of the milk setting the glass in the sink she left the kitchen she didn’t go back to sleep couldn’t go back to sleep it’s been like that for the last two month the same routine she’d wake up shaking and sweating she’d rinse her face drink a glass of cool milk go jogging to shake of the fear and terror but somehow today was different it was as if the dream has taking a toll on her physically she was aching so bad, so she settled to watch TV she sank on the cushion flipped on the TV flipping through channels non seemed to take her interest the graham Norton show was on which she watched for like fifteen minutes and changed the channel she allowed a flitting smile to pass her lips sponge bob square was on it was one of her favorite carton while growing up she didn’t know they still showed it she liked SpongeBob and his friend Mr. crab and Patrick what never ceased to amaze her was sponge bobs innocence she didn’t know when she dozed off she woke to the aroma of freshly brewed coffee and eggs frying her stomach growled reminding her she hadn’t eaten since yesterday breakfast of dry toast and coffe she looked at the wall clock after eight she padded softly to the kitchen stopping at the door threshold her mother standing over the gas cooker ‘mom you know you don’t have to babysit me am a big girl now’ she said her mom turned around to address her ‘ well hello to you to, a suitable way to greet your mom in the morning’ she crossed the threshold to kiss her mom softly on the cheek ‘sorry mom good morning’ grabbing the mug on the rack she went to the coffee pot to pour herself a cup of freshly brewed coffee cupping the mug in her hand she blew the dark brew and took a sip ‘had a rough night’ her mom asked, not wanting to answer the question she settled on changing the subject ‘hmmm mom the food smells good’ she set her coffee down and hugged her mother from behind ‘get the plates on the table and lets eat and then will would talk about the question you so carefully want avoid’ placing plates on the table in the kitchen they settled to eat ‘so’ her mom said lifting a questioning eyebrow she groaned ‘come on mom why can’t you just buy it at least for once ‘so spill it’ her mom said accepting defeat she sighed forked some egg into her mouth and chewed gathering her bearing wandering were to start from as if her mother read her mind she said ‘start from the beginning’ taking in a deep breath she started ‘every night for the last two months I have been having dreams, terrible nightmares a horrible looking mons…’ her voice broke she’d never talked about the dream before thinking it was different ‘ter’ she completed ‘pursuing… when she was through she was visibly shaking her mom came to her and wrapped her in a warm embrace she buried her face in her moms shoulder and cried, heart wrenching sobs she cried for herself and the fear that never seemed far from her and most of all cried for her grandma who passed away two months ago not knowing where all this emotions were coming from and all the while her mom just held her stroking her hair and whispering soft words of comforts when she was sure she cried all her tears out she hesitantly removed herself from the comfort of her moms warm embrace sniffling she brushed at the tears with her hand and gave her mom a wobbly smile ‘my brave little Esmeralda’ her mom said using her thumb to swipe at Esmeralda’s tears .Esmeralda burst into another torrent of tears in her mother’s arm. ‘am probably the last person on earth you should call brave I mean come on mom which adult will cry on her mummy’s shoulder because she had a dream about some monster that does not even exist, god! Am so pathetic! And look what I did’ pointing to her moms tear soaked blouse ‘I ruined it!’ her mom hushed her ‘that’s nonsense it can be remedied’ her mom assured her ‘ don’t be to hard on yourself you are a brave girl Esmie don’t let anyone or yourself tell you otherwise, now tell me which nine year old girl will crawl into a dark creepy hole to save the life of little Ashley’s cat despite her allergies for cat foregoing what mother nature threw at her to save the day’ Esmeralda giggled ‘mom you make me sound like a superhero and it was nothing I couldn’t possibly ignore the cry of little Ashley crying and besides it wasn’t some labyrinth it was just a hole’ Esmeralda said rolling her eyes ‘see my point exactly, cut yourself some slack and stop being so hard on yourself allow space for mistakes making mistakes doesn’t make you the devil it only makes you better so the same mistakes aren’t repeated experience is the best teacher think about it Mia’ her mom said standing up and placing a kiss on Esmeralda’s forehead stacking the plates of their left over and carrying it to the sink Esmeralda stood up following her mother to the kitchen wanting to help her mother with the dishes ‘ I can take care of this myself go take a bath’ her mom said waving her away’ Esmeralda went to her room made her bed opening her wardrobe she selected a black pencil jeans and light green sleeveless turtle neck blouse going into the bathroom she discarded her night gown on the pile of dirty laundry she took a long cold shower stepping out of the shower she wrapped herself in a towel and dried herself she caught her reflection in the mirror her eyes were swollen from crying but it was an improvement from the haunted look earlier on she studied her face closely in the mirror her face was pink from the cold shower she was considered attractive enough but she was no great beauty like her mother. her mother had the look of a delicate china doll that could shatter if man handled nobody knew how deceptive her moms appearance looked her mom was a mother tigress willing to fight for her own there had never been really any resemblance between mother and daughter both physically and character wise while her mother had straight blonde her hers were a mass of red unruly curls while her mom has light blue eyes hers were green like emeralds like her name indicated ‘Esmeralda’ while her mom skin was slightly pale hers slightly tanned not due to long hours in the sun but the product of her moms pale light skin and her dad’s deeply tanned skin while her mom would be considered reed thin she was voluptuous while her mom was considered tall she was average height character wise there was none so different while her mom was a fearless tiger she was a shy coward, a knock at the door snapped her out of herself examination and self comparism, ‘Mia you’re not gonna spend eternity there now are you?’ her mom said , ‘ just a sec I’ll be right out’ she replied grabbing her hair brush she went into her room and found her mom raiding her wardrobe ‘ hey mia that green top won’t do its pretty cold outside’ she said still raiding ‘ mom what are you doing cant a girl have her privacy’ she said in exasperation ‘what does it look like am doing getting my girl a decent top for this weather don’t want you catching a cold god knows your looking ill already and whether you like it or not you are seeing the doctor am taking you myself’ her mom said with a voice that breeched no argument ‘so much so for moving into my own apartment okay mom I will go but ALONE and am wearing the green top’ she said grabbing the top and the jeans and stalking back to the bathroom.
Ten minutes later, her mom managed to convince her to don a black leather jacket they took the elevator to the garage she kissed her mom good bye and hopped into her BMW she’d already turned the ignition when her mom waved her to hold on her mom came to her with a suite case in one hand ‘ mom I don’t know what you are doing with that suite case but you are not going with me’ Esmeralda said ‘don’t be silly dear of course am not coming with you I expect you to do as you promised and go to the doctor’ her mom said with a hint of warning in her voice ‘oh that’s by the way’ she rounded the car opened the boot and placed the suite case there ‘lizzie will be spending some time with you meg decided she needed a change of environment that included good adult company to advice her, her grades are deteriorating meg suspects boy trouble’ her mom said with a wicked grin ‘ good advice about upping her grades I can do that boys am not so sure’ Esmeralda said ‘eh you will manage did I mention you are to pick her at two sharp don’t be late’ giving her mom a wave she zoomed out of the garage.
