Breathe in.

Breathe in.

A Story by Natalie Paskos

She smiled to herself while the sun hit her skin, leaving evidence of the summer she's leaving behind;
She went out every night, she partied all day, she smiled a lot, and definitely got a few wicked tan lines.

She looked around the scenery and smiled, knowing it really couldn't get any better than this.
The wind whispering sweet nothings in her ear, the tree covering her face giving her free range to take everything in, the geese in the distance paddling along peacefully.
She lit her cigarette and smiled acknowledging the fact that she may not get a moment this sublime again.
Finally the heat got to her, and she stripped off her tank top she had over her bikini, and walked out into the water, loving the cool water engulfing her.
Before she knew what she was doing, she threw herself further into the water and swam forward with all the energy she had.
"Breathe in, breathe out. F**k, why isn't this working?"
Her heart dropped, her lungs felt locked, her head was spinning.
She was sinking lower and lower under the depths with no one near by to help.
She kicked as hard as she could, but she had gotten caught on some weeds on the bottom of the rocks.
"Keep kicking! Kick harder!"
The voice in her head was making her head spin, her stomach tie into knots, and suddenly, her vision started fading to black.
"NO. There is too much you have to do. Kick. Harder."
She flung her feet forward with all her strength left, and broke free.
Breaking through the glass like water, she hit the surface gasping for air.
She managed to make herself swim to the shore; once at shore, she decided, maybe I should just stay where I know.
