Poetry And BaseballA Poem by Nancy Lee ShraderPoetry and Baseball It shouldn’t have been a death sentence We were told you could live for years Now I’m counting the missing moments Through an avalanche of tears I wrote poetry, leaving you all alone Just a few short steps away you sat Watching a TV baseball game All those lost moments I regret I could have helped you cheer For your team of choice Snuggled close together Cheering with my squeaky voice Instead I wrote away the hours As your life just slipped away Oh my darling I miss you so Can’t wait for the judgment day
I watched Justin graduate Wishing you were there I'm sure you saw him Throw his hat with flair
All dressed up for the prom You would have been so proud I can almost hear you Whistling oh so loud
Now I’m watching baseball At the new stadium built this year Each double play and homerun You’ll see through my eyes, dear
Grandson hit a grand slam Just a day or two ago He’s also pitching no hitters But this I’m sure you know I felt you there beside me As Lyndsey made the double play The smile upon her face Must have really made your day The day my scooter tipped Toppling me to the ground You asked God to intercede Your love came full circle round I miss you every moment Of each and every day And all the moments lost to us But in my heart you’ll always stay
Together we'll watch baseball And write poetry in rhyme You're in my heart and mind dear You'll be there for all time
