A Sparrow's Song

A Sparrow's Song

A Poem by Nancy Lee Shrader

A Sparrow’s Song

Excerpt from In The LIGHT Where HE Lives

His eye is on the sparrow, the smallest of birds

I sing my song proudly, remembering God’s Holy Words

From a branch on many fig trees I sang my song

I watched the Lamb of God for thirty three years long

In a manger filled with hay bathed in heaven’s light

A magnificent star shown down in the night

As a young lad He marveled them all

This boy who was born in an animal stall

He went the Jordan, baptized with love

The Spirit of God descended on Him like a dove

I watched fisherman let down their nets in the sea

Enough fish to feed all of my kind, not just me

At a wedding feast, He turned water into wine

And when it was tasted it was more than just fine

He healed the cripple, the blind and the lame

Tell no one and praise the Father’s Holy Name

A mod carried stones because of a woman’s shame

He looked at the woman and reprieved her of blame

His following grew as his ministry spread

From a little boy’s lunch five thousand were fed

He waited four days and two sisters asked why

God showed His might from His throne on high

Lazarus come forth, the crowd heard Him say

The dead man was raised on that very day

A joyful crowd laid palm leaves before His path

He entered in triumph, but would soon face their wrath

In a quiet garden, He vowed to be

The Paschal Lamb for both you and for me

I saw on His head a crown of thorns

I watched in horror as he was ripped and torn

I heard the mod scream Crucify!  Crucify!

As blood mingled with a tear that fell from His eye

He carried His Cross to Calvary’s Hill

God’s One True Son, they craved to kill

I saw God’s love bleed for the week and the small

Even the smallest of birds, He died for us all

On that tree of life His blood was shed

For three dark days, the Lamb of God lay dead

From my fig tree, I watched the stone roll away

The King of kings and Lord of lords walked out that day

Not many days later He ascended on a cloud

Leaving in the tomb many sins with His shroud

His eye is on me the sparrow, the smallest bird

His eyes hold you closer confirmed by His Holy Word
