Life's Choices

Life's Choices

A Poem by Nancy Lee Shrader

Life’s Choices

She loved living her life of choice

Never listening to her body’s voice

She smoked because it looked cool

But was she breaking creation’s rule

First came the cough and shortness of breath

Still she didn’t believe it would lead to death

Cancer took root within her lungs and grew

Silently oh silently cancer spread, she hadn’t a clue

A silent killer ran through her veins deep

It went unnoticed, but she will now weep

First a lung, and then her left breast too

And to her hair she sadly whispered adieu

Still she smoked it is now too late

Her frail body stands at death’s gate

Chemo left her weak and frail

Her eyes now closed in death’s dark veil

This picture she left so you won’t ignore

Heed her word she does implore

Listen to your body, it will tell you true

Cancer is a silent killer for me and you

Please don’t let her die in vane

Everyone erase all of cancer’s stain
