Princess and the Troll

Princess and the Troll

A Story by Nancy Lee Shrader

Once upon a time in the darkest forest lived an ugly Troll who wanted to be a handsome prince.  He made himself a crown of briers and a scepter from a milkweed, but still he looked like a Troll.

One day a beautiful princess wandered into the dark forest.  She had fear in her eyes, and jumped at every sound.  She had taken a wrong turn by the mystic waterfall and then another by the crimson pool, and before she knew it; she was deep in darkness.

She cried out in fear, causing the predators of the dark forest to take notice of her.  They were all around her, moving in closer with every beat of her heart.  They could smell her fear and her scent drove them into a killing frenzy.

The only being in the dark forest they feared was the ugly Troll who lived under the log bridge.  His face was so ugly, and his breath so fowl; he was to be feared, and they steered clear of his stench.

The unhappy Troll heard the fearful scream, and he heard the cry of the predatory beings, as they moved in for the kill.  He emerged from his hiding place under the bridge, where he hid his ugliness.  He had to see where that scream had come from.

His eyes fell upon her beauty; she was all he had ever dreamed about.  He had seen this beautiful creature in his dreams almost every night.  He then turned his ugly head and glared at all the predatory beings stalking this beautiful creature.  He opened his mouth and breathed in deep, and then expelled his fowl breath in all directions, causing the killers to burst into flames.

The Troll turned his ugly head to look upon the beautiful princess.  She didn’t cower in fear.  She didn’t run from the sight of him.

She smiled sweetly and said thank you as she curtseyed while holding her long flowing gown.

The ugly Troll did something he had never done before.  He smiled, bowing in homage of the beautiful princess.  Then he spoke.

“Forgive my ugly appearance beautiful princess.  I will go now so not to burn your blue eyes with my ugliness.”

“Please stay, my prince.  There is nothing ugly about you.  I will reward you with a kiss.”

She had called him a prince.  He couldn’t believe his large troll ears.

The Troll bent down his ugly head and puckered his ugly black lips.

The beautiful princess cupped his face with her small delicate hands, and then with lips of rose color pink; she kissed the ugly Troll’s black lips.

In that moment, he was transformed into a handsome prince.  His crown of briers became a crown of gold.  At his side he carried a bright silver sword, and then out of the darkness a nearby wombat turned into a galloping white steed
