The Other Side of Midnight

The Other Side of Midnight

A Poem by Nancy Lee Shrader

The Other Side of Midnight

The other side of midnight

Grandma told this little tale

About vampires and werewolves

And she wasn’t drinking ale

No she was quite sober

Nary a drop ever touched her lips

I wrote down her words

Into my manuscripts

She said vampires were real

They stalked her in the night

Lusting for her blood

Giving her a fright

Next she told me about the night

A werewolf came to call

Gnashing its teeth and growling

Stabbed its claws into the wall

She used her silver wedding knife

Stabbed it deep into its heart

In just a moment later

It turned into her neighbor Art

Grandma tell me about the vampires

My mind ready to hear of the curse

It was then I remembered the stick

She always carried in her purse

I always wondered why

She carried that sharpened stick

I don’t wonder anymore

Grandma told me she used it quick

A vampire caught her one starry night

As she was walking to the barn

She stabbed that stick in deep

And this ends my little yarn

This is was absolutely cute. I love how you incorporate an old woman telling the tale. I can picture her killing the werewolf and the vampire. Wonderfully written and full of vivid imagery.
