The Look

The Look

A Poem by Nancy Lee Shrader

The LOOK

All mothers have a LOOK

They use to keep their kids in line

Seen often on their own mom’s face

Each time they began to whine

I had the LOOK in days gone by

My teenagers knew it well

Knowing they had better shape up

Or be in the grounded cell

Locked away from phone calls

Away from fun and games

Oh yes that LOOK always saved them

I didn’t have to call their names

Even when they were little

They knew the LOOK, and would beware

If ignored, they were always sent

To the be-sweet-chair

That look I see today

On my daughter’s face you see

She learned it; oh yes she learned it

From those years of watching me

My son recently discovered the LOOK

His new step children put it there

He’s learned the LOOK makes children

To stop acting up and beware

Daddy’s also need the LOOK

But not as often as mommy’s do

But when daddies use the LOOK

Kids know their actions are taboo

Mother’s pass this LOOK along

As her children grow

From generation to generation

All children, this LOOK they know

Oh yes, the LOOK does its job

Making parents oh so proud

My grown up children use the LOOK

And never shout out loud

I said, I had the LOOK in days gone by

But not so much anymore

I’m a grandma now you see … and

The LOOK is locked behind my heart’s door

Grandchildren have locked up the LOOK

Because they are a sheer delight

They fill my heart with gladness

Making my elder years so bright

Grandmas show them fun and games

For an hour or two at a time, you see

Then send them home to mom and dad

Where the LOOK always needs to be

My granddaughter speaks about the look

That sometimes covers her mommy’s face

While dancing around my living room

In a dress made of silk and lace

My grandson speaks of the look too

That his mommy wears sometimes

And all the trouble he could get into

If he commits those little crimes

Their eyes are now big as saucers

As I told them the LOOK first was mine

But grandma, I’ve never seen that LOOK

On your face, and I’m almost nine

You too will have that look someday

This grandma tells them with a smile

Your kids will tell your mom about the LOOK

And upon her face, they’ll too see a smile

You see my LOOK has softened

By many years and over time

Grandmas lose the LOOK

As grandchildren became my poetic rhyme

Oh do I remember that look... my mother was gentle but she had the power of persuasion many times... I knew when to not cross the line... this was quite fun to read and brought back fond memories.
