Moms and Dads RememberA Poem by Nancy Lee Shrader
Moms and Dads Remember Children are entertained by asking millions of questions that have no answers at all Believing that moms and dads should know all the answers, because they stand tall They lie on the back in the green grass watching animal shapes in the sky Always expecting the man in the moon to speak and always asking why A child’s curse is punctures from sticks and rocks in the park Stubbing their toes in their room walking around with eyes closed in the dark Pale faces are burned in the hot summer sun on beaches everywhere While other children only tan when their skin is laid bare Un-socked feet always deliver blisters that burn and ache Families still have fun with a pile of leaves and a rake Childhood is sometimes a curse, but most of the time they’re happy and carefree Dancing on toes, playing dolls or trucks and cars, and having pretend tea Childhood goes by so fast, too quickly moms and dads say The much wanted silence is way too quiet, when the empty nest comes to stay So forget all the wounds with stitches, blisters and stubbed toes All we’ll remember is boys will be boys and our sweet little girls with a turned up nose
