Clash of the Titans

Clash of the Titans

A Poem by Nancy Lee Shrader

Clash of the Titans

Zeus was angered by the king

Argus comes to naught

Hear the princess sadly sing

In a wooden chest

Danae and her son

Left adrift, child at her breast

Zeus gives the order

Flood kingdom’s border

Poseidon obeys great Zeus

Open up the gates

Release the Kraken

Acrisius in dyer straits

Seriphos is home

Island in the sea

Perseus don’t roam

Argus paid the price

Pride caused its ruin

Zeus was angered by the king

Argus feels the Kraken’s sting

~~~~~~~~~~
Thetis, goddess of the sea
Calibos her son
Defied great Zeus’ decree
Calibos is cursed
By great Zeus himself
Once handsome now he’s reversed
With horns and a tail
Hear the eerie tale
Forced to live as an outcast
Mother’s anger swells
On Andromeda
Angry goddess cast her spells
He will never wed
His Andromeda
Every night called from her bed
Riddles she must solve
Or her suitors die
Thetis, goddess of the sea
Hears not Andromeda’s plea
~~~~~~~~~~

Son of Zeus wakes from a dream

Summoned by Thetis

A pawn in her evil scheme

Ammon the playwrite

Tells Perseus of

Andromeda’s plight

With gifts from the gods

Perseus at odds

Calibos loses a hand

The riddle he knows

Invisible he was

Perseus breaks curse of woes

With helmet and sword

Pegasus free from

Calibos the evil lord

Riddle he has learned

He claims his new bride

Son of Zeus wakes from a dream

Calibos plots a new scheme

~~~~~~~~~~
Queen Cassiopeia’s pride
Angered the goddess
Sent Perseus on a quest
To save his young bride
Must kill the Kraken
Zeus commands; Athena lied
Now you must bestow
Your pet owl Bubo
It is my wish, my command
She made a quick switch
Mechanical owl
Beeping noises, eyes that twitch
Three witches tell all
Medusa’s cold stare
Remember our words recall
Had she known the price
Silent she’d remain
Queen Cassiopeia’s pride
Caused the planets to collide
~~~~~~~~~~

Medusa now beheaded

On Isle of the dead

But her stare is still dreaded

Tied up in his cape

Medusa still feared

But for her there’s no escape

On Pegasus wings

Courageous heart sings

Perseus to the rescue

The time is at hand

Unleash the Kraken

Zeus cries out; it’s my command

Andromeda tied

Awaiting her fate

And Cassiopeia cried

Kraken seeks its prey

Perseus on time

Medusa now beheaded

Her stare the Karken dreaded

~~~~~~~~~~
Zeus declares final decree
Happy bride and groom
Medusa thrown in the sea
Set in the night sky
Constellations four
We hear Andromeda sigh
Lovers set in light
Among stars so bright
Perseus, Andromeda
Pegasus the true
Constellation shape
Queen Cassiopeia too
Stars grouped together
Telling us the tale
Even in stormy weather
Clash of the Titans
The still of the night
Zeus declares final decree
We know true love is the key
I wondered a bit about the mechanical owl, how and if, they possessed that type of item in those days....but still...glorious tales.
You did an awesome job on this one, Nancy. Mythology reveals the fact that creative minds have roamed Earth for a very long time. Sharon
I really enjoyed this caleidoskop through Greek mythology, poetic patterns as bits of coloured imagination were reflected by mirrors of our consciousness.
