First ThanksgivingA Poem by Nancy Lee Shrader
First Thanksgiving Pilgrims and Indians on that first Thanksgiving Day Roasted duck graced their holiday table in 1621 Children grinded corn into corn oatmeal Wampanoag killed venison, but not with a gun There was no turkey, mashed potatoes or pumpkin pie Only duck, venison, seafood, cabbage, corn and squash Not a big sit down feast, they ate inside and outdoors First Thanksgiving lasted a week, oh my gosh Between the feasting games were played Pin game much like horseshoes and blind man’s bluff Everywhere dancing and singing filled the air Target shooting went on for days, they couldn’t get enough The High Table was filled with famous folks Governor Bradford beside Captain Miles Standish Massasoit, Squanto and Warrior Counselors sat at meat They shared fish, duck and venison, what a tasty dish Now you’ve heard the way Thanksgiving was long ago I bet the humble turkey wondered how it came to be How did turkey become the Thanksgiving bird Spreading their wings wishing they were ducks as they flee Not like the pilgrims with their week long feast Come to the table and feast we must With tasty dishes in bowls overflowing Stuffing ourselves until we bust While you are eating your Holiday feast Remember the pilgrims bowed down in prayer Giving thanks to God that they survived the year Thanksgiving means knowing that God is there © 2008 Nancy Lee Shrader |
