I Was So Blessed

I Was So Blessed

A Poem by Nancy Lee Shrader

I Was So Blessed

David my beautiful son

I was so blessed to have you in my life

The good times have erased the pain and strife

In those three short years you blessed me

With sunshine, rainbows and unclouded days with glee

Your smile always lit up a room

And enhanced a flower’s sweet perfume

Your smile was brighter than the sun at high noon

Flashing with the colors of a summer afternoon

Like the colors of the rainbow

When the sun resumes its glow

After a cool spring rain

Your sweet smile erased my pain

Cloudless skies followed your smiling face

Laughed each time in a tickle embrace

You even had smiles when the storm clouds blew in

I can still see your mischievous grin

As cancer weakened and devoured your life force

You taught your parents to stay the course

I still see the sparkle in your eyes of brown

Your silky dark hair now adorned with a crown

Now you’re and angel lighting the way

For your mom and dad to the glorious day

God sent you to earth to show us His heart

And express God’s love, you did impart

One day we will be together, mom, dad and son

Wearing angel wings when life’s battle is won

Yes blessed I was with heaven's angel in my midst

God sent you to me, so I would know I'd been kissed

Lord, I know you are listening, please pass this along

Let David know that I have remained strong

He’ll see me again, when the Midnight Cry is heard

I have kept the faith and believed in Your Word

Wonderful.
I like the fact that the poem holds no trace of desperation, and that you express affection for your child as if he would be alive.
