be a sheep and face an eternity of safe boredom

This brings a quote to mind from the great C.S. Lewis:

"We are born helpless. As soon as we are fully conscious we discover loneliness. We need others physically, emotionally, intellectually: we need them if we are to know anything, even ourselves."

I don't think there is a sense of thrill in being alone, I think that it creates a deeper sense of longing in us. Thought provoking stuff nonetheless, as always!
