The Stomp Dance

The Stomp Dance

A Poem by Dam(i)sini

The night was charged with suspense

A spark, a glow, a small flame, small shadows

A fire, bigger shadows, sparks fly to the night sky

A shadow places logs on the fire, arranging the wood just so

The flames caged in by the wood,

The shadow speaks out loud, strange words come forth

Beyond the circle of light, shadows move, strange words answer his call

The shadow speaks again, same words, louder this time

The fire grows, changing the shadow into a man

The shadows beyond the light, move more determined

The man speaks, a lone shadow steps into the firelight,

The shadow has formed into a man, around he walks

The fire sparks to the sky, more shadows join,

The light changes these shadows into more men, and women too

The night's energy charged,,sparks, whispers of strange sounds, liken to rain but not rain

The leader walks the circle of the fire with his left side closest to the flames

His walk changes, a stomp step, sounds rise loud more rain sounds, no, the sounds of a rattle

The women's legs have turtle shells, the rain sounds come from them, now a rhythm

A chant, no a song, the circle of dancers grow, not really a circle, more like a whirlpool,

A leader, many followers, but the leader follows no one, so not a circle is formed

but something better, stronger, something that grows,it feeds on the energy of the dancers

The leader slows his song, he slows his pace, he stops the dance, the song, one word is heard

Wado!
