A Letter That Will Never Be Read...

A Letter That Will Never Be Read...

A Poem by Maraina Cross

How many times have you cried because of me?

In silence or alone.

Ten, twenty…

How many times have you felt powerless because of me from seeing me in a hospital bed?

Fighting for my life.

Thirteen, twenty-one…

How many times have I turned an awful color on you?

Red, purple, blue, white…

Three, four…

How many times have you had to act with the speed and grace of a medical professional?

Without you actually being one.

Forty, fifty-five…

How many times have seen my blood on the hospital sheets?

Six, seven…

How many times have you had to be strong from my sister?

To say it’s ok when you didn’t know yourself.

Nine, twelve…

How many nightmares have I caused you?

On uncomfortable hospital mattresses.

Seventy, eighty-three…

How many times have I caused you both grief?

Too many to count.

But you both do these things anyway because it’s your job.

No not job, your superhero powers.

And your names are Mom and Dad.
