Abandoned Island Beach

Abandoned Island Beach

A Poem by The Night Poet

My feet splash along the turquoise waters
lapping on an abandoned island beach
I plunge my rusted sword deep into the fine white sand
to balance my ailing body
A body washed away from my fallen ship

Each cell of my brain pounds by deafening drums
beating with the pulse of her heart wanting more
Not far beyond, my blurry eyes did gaze at palm trees
swaying to the last melody, I played that lifted us
wildly into the starry night

A crusty starfish clings to my ankles

as it takes its final breath From depths, she arose,

in search of freedom away from darkness past
Caressing island breezes soothe my wounded shoulders
I stumble along and gasp for the last breath of a dying soul

Collapsing from exhaustion,

I feel our hearts split by their perilous journeys

are taken by the final tide that is here at last
The heat from the arms of Apollo’s sun

begins to burn my salty, dry and torn body

My eyes grow heavy as I’m drawn

into a deep and much-needed sleep
Vultures fly above circling patiently

for their long-awaited treat

that soon will fill their emptied bellies

Now I can only pray to be awakened in her arms once more
Somewhere along this abandoned island beach
