She walks a dog (not anythingA Poem by Jared FellowsIn the style of e. e. cummingsShe
walks a dog (not anything else,
but a dog) she treats him like
a dog she gave the orders and
her word is final (never did the
dog have a voice, dogs don’t
talk back) her affection and
attention was plead for a
puppy kiss was answered with
a slap on the snout and the
dog slouched out She tells
the dog his orders (if done
wrong she would cry to
her mother and father for
sending such a terrible creature
that is not fit for her,
but the dog loved her the
same The dog was not worthy
enough for a space at
the table to eat so he would
be on the floor The dog
couldn’t sleep next to her
and attempts to climb into
bed with her was futile she
owned him and he did whatever
she wants Well
one day she awoke to
a startling surprise those
paws were gone so
were the claws and
the golden hair covering
his body was gone he
awoke and stared he
had a voice She
walked a dog (anything
else but a dog) © 2009 Jared FellowsAuthor's Note
