Jesus Weeps

Jesus Weeps

A Poem by Lovesleftovers

“Jesus Weeps”

Jesus wept in the bible.
He weeps now still.
For every man, woman and child
suffering at the hands of war,
poverty, hate and injustice.
Even skeptics feel his pain.
Sitting in pews,
you lift your head to the Heavens
while shaking an angry fist and
cry “why?”
Then go home to your televisions,
fast food and text messages to forget.
You may say,
I am but one.
But, Jesus wept
are two short words.
Yet as powerful and forceful
 as disasters we’ve endured.
Jesus is weeping.
And people are drowning
in his tears.

Christianity has long seen in Jesus the imagery of the Suffering Servant, whose countenance is so lovingly described by the prophet (and poet!) Isaiah. Your focus on that simple two-word phrase, "Jesus wept," highlights well the true character of Jesus, who feels what we feel and bears the sorrows that we also bear. Nicely written poetry.
