Dysfunction

Dysfunction

A Poem by Lovesleftovers

I wake

I cry

The screams of angry voices frighten me

In a place that should be safe

I am alone and cower

In a place that should be filled with love

There is hate and violence

These people who should protect me

Expose me to pain and punishment

Betrayed so young

My innocence is gone

While the imagery here is disturbing, it captures well the sense of a betrayal of innocence. The simple and direct phrasing, and the lack of punctuation, which lends a fluid quality to the piece, combine to make a very effective poem.
