Requiem for a Cadaver ..A Poem by hariSpare me the torture...I want to rest
“The cadaver or the 'body' as he was fondly called Just seven days old... he was the baby of Anatomy lab! Had a violent death in his previous birth.. An accident, right in front of his partner's eyes 'It was his wish..', SHE had said, standing by the mortuary door, tears streaming down HER beautiful face, 'take him away! He doesn't want to be burnt or buried...' He was shy at first, and much vulnerable Twenty pairs of nervous eyes looking in awe The vibrant professor calmly explaining his assets Like a display at an exhibition, he felt Staring at the halogen lamp...and the white ceiling beyond No pain he felt when the first cut was made But sensed the discomfort of his captive audience He tried to maintain that poker face When the lovely girl in blue dress fainted And when that self styled stud puked Having seen a 'heart' at close quarters! Slowly cut apart by the persistent professor He suffered in silence, the humiliation of a second death In anticipation of just one thing...he knew SHE would come Last evening SHE walked in, HER back dress flowing Only the two of them in that dreary setting SHE came close, he could sense HER presence.. SHE asked him, 'Haven't you had enough? Shall I take you away, for I can't bear to see you like this!' He felt a single teardrop fall on his still open left eye, Trickle down the face onto the parched lips But alas, he couldn't taste the sweetness 'Enough...', he thought, 'It is now time for me to go' He sensed HER fade away and he then knew SHE understood his readiness to go ...the Professor was at his cheerful self Summing up the anatomy lessons Even the girl who fainted was looking brighter, The stud who puked, from behind he took a peek 'Let's wind up', the Professor said, 'And thank him Your learning process incomplete without him' The poker face intact, he silently accepted the complements The burly lab attendants, when they came, The starry eyed boys and girls bid farewell They shifted him on to the gurney As the procession left the anatomy lab, he knew His second death awaited him...and he was happy! © 2016 hari |
