The Fool

The Fool

A Poem by Ashley Campbell

I should have known I’d be the one,
The one to play the fool.
I fell for you,
You fell for her…
And she hadn’t a clue.
I unlocked myself to only you..
One of the very very few…
And you betray me silently..
I always thought you knew.
A confession denied,
You let on and lied…
Made me believe you felt the same.
I fell for you.
You fell for her.
….
She fell for you.
And it is I who played the fool.
Believing you…
In you.
I see now what should be done.
Lock you away my beaten heart..
Speak not a word.
To allow myself a love…
Fate would have it not.
Words that feel so empty,
So foreign..
Even to me.
I should have known I’d play the fool,
Like so many times before…
Forgiving you..
The both of you.
Again, I play the fool.
The one who seeks and finds the fragile cracks on fragile lines…
The one who fights a broken heart,
One who denies screaming “victim!”.
…..
Shadows, I betroth myself.
Darkness, I respect.
So again I’ll find myself, sailing along the wind..
Searching.
Waiting.
forever seemingly bleeding.
Charades I’ll play, the lovely game..
The lovely game of chance.
Make you think that I don’t mind,
If it happiness you should find…
I’ll step back, if only just for you.
I’ll play the fool again and again,
For the fool…
Is all I’ve ever known...

Hi Silver Wolf,
I'm happy you liked my poem Artemisia and you were right. I wrote it from my soul.
I've read some of your poems and I liked "The Fool." I really liked the line "The one who seeks and finds the fragile cracks on fragile lines. The internal rhyme worked well there.
I must admit being a very honest person that the macabre is not for me. I cannot sit through a "CSI"program, so I would be the last person to even begin to know how to critique your work.
This line of poetry, books, etc. that you write, seems to be in demand these days, so I wish you well with your poetry and I think it's wonderful you are having an anthology published. That's a very hard to do these days.
Good luck,
Helen

Wow, I really like this one.
It seems to get the point of the poem accross to the reader gracefully, yet it does infact smack one in the face.
One of my favorites, no doubt.
Much love.
Be Well.
Abigail
