CallinA Story by Jeremy Mutchalways wanted to write a book so finally started, I'd love some feed back, please excuse grammar and some spelling, also if anyone sees something that should be changed with another word tell me"Get up boy" My fathers voice finally pulled me back into consciousness and with his voice, the throbbing of my jaw "that was a little cheap don't you think?" My mother chided him. I help up my hand " it's fine mother, I let my guard down" I said as I slowly stood up rubbing my jaw, "fine" my mother scoffed, I smiled and returned my focus back to my father. "very good Callin you are learning" he growled at me as he resumed his stance "Pick up your sword and we shall continue" I leaned down and grabbed my sword, if you could call it that, it was only a firm oak branch with a cross piece of wood strapped to it by leather twine to protect the users hands. I straightened up and rolled my shoulders as I took my stance, my father scoffed as I readied myself, and he had every right to, it was a unique stance that no one but myself used. I held my sword in my left hand, but let the blade drop down at an angle, but instead of it pointing forward or out to the left, I held it in such a way that the blade rested behind my legs, I kept my right arm up and bent in front of my chest, on my forearm rested a thick iron bracer with fur lining the inside, it was initially meant only as minor protection but I had learn to use it to deflect attacks, I used no shield, just like my father, it was a family tradition passed down for generations, a shield was a sign of weakness, people saw it as you not being strong enough to protect yourself. My fathers stance on the other hand was traditional, he kept the left side of his body towards his opponent making himself as small of a target as possible. his sword was held back towards his right side with his arms bent so that the hilt rested near his shoulder and his blade towered above him, A true knight of the old order. The sound of my fathers feet shifting in the sand brought back my concentration just in time for me to hear him let out a battle cry and charge towards me. I slowly opened my eyes as I woke from the sweet caress of old dreams and memories, I layed in bed staring up at the solid colourless brick ceiling, the same brick that made up the three walls and floor of the small cell that had become my home for the past two weeks. my bed was nothing more than stone slab that jutted out from the wall, my business was to be done in nothing more than a leaky bucket in the corner, sighing I sat up and tossed me legs over the edge of the stone. "today is the day" I mumbled to myself as I stood up and stretched, trying to relieve some of the tightness that had built up from the stone as I slept. Rolling my shoulders I made shuffled the few steps needed to access my bucket and continued my morning routine, retying my pants I glanced down at the shackles that bound my legs so I could barely walk, "Where the hell am I gonna go?" I mumbled to myself as my gaze fell upon the two inch thick steel bars that made up the fourth wall and door of my cell "Not like I could escape" I looked at the floor and laughed. "Awake already are we?" a voice said, I didn't have to look up to know who was walking down the hallway towards me, "ah brother!" I exclaimed as I stood, raising my head to look at the man "How nice of you to visit" I faked a smile at him as he came to stand in front of me. this mans name was Rohtan,, he was a general in the kings army, with almost almond skin and a face that looked as if it had been shaped from marble, his eyes almost glowed green when he looked at you, he had long black hair tied back into a pony tail, he was the epitome of what our people believed the gods looked like. He looked at me with a blank face for a few seconds as I stood there grinning, slowly the corners of his mouth started to curve upward “I’m sorry I haven’t been to see you lately, I have been in meetings with the king trying to convince him to overrule the decision of the court, I’m afraid to say that it is not going to well” he said as the smile on his face faded into a more serious scowl “He is completely controlled by his advisers, it sickens me what has happened to this country.” He shook hes head and looked down at the ground in defeat “I’m a general, i swore an oath to protect this country and its citizens from danger..” sighing i reached my hand through the bars and gave him a swat across his head, “Have you forgotten the oath WE made Rohtan? No just as the kingdoms lap dogs” I scolded, He looked up at me in confusion and slight annoyance for slapping him. “We swore that no matter what happened, and no matter the cost we would keep the people safe, because without the people their is no country to protect” He looked at me with new hope in his eyes, but only for a second “And was this part of your plan? Getting drunk and running your mouth off about the king? Its almost as if you wanted to get thrown in here” I slowly started to chuckle, eventually leading to a full blow howl. “oh you son of a-” he started, i shook my finger and tisked at him “watch your language” Rohtan rolled his eyes at the remark “you know I’m not a damn child Callin” I laughed and winked at him “now, now we don’t want to be missing our opportunity” I said as i pointed down the hall at the two armed guards making their way towards my cell. Rohtan put on a stern face as he turned around “What are you doing down here!” he barked at the two young soldiers, probably not even through there first month of service “w-we were sent here to collect the prisoner” one of them stammered, obviously shaken by Rohtan’s fierce attitude “On whose orders” he growled, “The commander, he says it is time” the other one said. “I see..” Rohtan trailed off as he glanced at me from the corner of his eyes, “very well take him then” he said as he moved aside, the guards nodded and hurried forward. I smiled as i put my hands through the bar and waited for them to put the shackles on me, just as the younger of the guards went to put them on i grabbed his wrist and yanked him forward smashing his head off of the thick steel bar, a loud thud resounded through my cell as the boy crumpled to the ground, the second guard started to let out a shout but before he could Rohtan wrapped his arm around his neck and quickly choked him out while slowly laying him down onto the floor, he looked at the two guards as he stood up shaking his head “it’s a shame it had to come to this” he mumbled as he walked over to the younger guard and pulled the keys off of his belt. “It was either them or me, and in this case I much prefer them” I said as he opened the door, Rohtan just looked at me and smiled “well some days I wish it was you” he said as he tossed me the keys “now get those shackles off your legs so we can get out of here” I rolled my eyes at him and bent down “well here’s the thing, we need to do one more thing before we leave” i said as i looked up at him sheepishly “and what would that be?” he sighed “obviously the reason I’m in this place, Leo is here” i said as i stood up and gave him a smile “ impossible i would have been informed” he said as he frowned while we walked down the corridor away from my cell “I had just found out recently as well, apparently there is another level below us where they are holding him that we never learned about, i think it’s a left up here” I said, grabbing his arm and pulling him into the next hallway, straight into the path of three guards doing there rounds “crap” Rohtan said as he jumped into action dashing forward and body checking one of the guards into the wall, one of the guards let out a yell as i dashed around Rohtan and grabbed both of the guards faces, they couldn’t do anything as i slammed them into the stone floor hearing a resounding crack as their heads made contact abruptly cutting off the guards voice. I looked back at Rohtan “ I was hoping we could get out quietly.” i said i sighed he as i turned around and continued down the corridor more quickly than before “we have to hurry, someone may have heard them” i said as we came upon a large wooden door reinforced with iron. We came to a stop in front of the door “This is it” I said, “you’ll have to take care of this” he looked at me in confusion, “I’m to weak to use it, don’t exactly get three course meals” i smiled glumly, he nodded, turning towards the door he closed his eyes and took a deep breath as he reached his arm out and placed his hand on the door, his eyes shot open and the muscles in his arm bulged as he shoved his palm into the door, the door shuddered as the wood buckled and the iron bent seconds before the door exploded backwards into the wall, he breathed out slowly as I walked passed him, “you seem to have lost your touch” i chided him, looking around the corner of the doorway, it was the top a spiraling stair case that went downwards but I could only see a few feet “It’s been years since I’ve used it, being a general you think i would be in battle more but I sit in the capital” he sighed as we started down the stair case “I miss the times we used to have Callin” i laughed © 2016 Jeremy MutchAuthor's Note
