Cellphones and relationships

A Poem by Lisa Musmeci

Cellphones and relationships
It seems that the more we have paid for something the better we take care of it.
When you get your brand new smartphone and it's just so pretty and great and not a scratch or ding on it. You make sure to buy a durable phone case and you take extra precautions to keep it beautiful.
Then after time, you start just tossing your phone in your purse along with pens and other such pointy items or in your pocket with your keys. At some point when some time has passed you get lazy with the care you show this item that you had valued so much before.
Relationships are being handled the same way nowadays. In the beginning it's new and beautiful and shiny. Not a ding or scratch to be found. You hold it close and take extra good care of it. But then... over time you start to make a little less effort every day. You get lazy. Until you look one day and your beautiful shiny exciting relationship has a few dings and scratches because you didn't value what you had like you should have.
So what will you do? Just upgrade like you could your cellphone that you promised to love and take care of? And how many "upgrades" will it take before you realize that had you only appreciated and nurtured the relationship you already had and recognized the amount you "paid" for it, the sacrifices you made...that you would be in possession of a priceless thing. Envied by many and admired by all. We get too comfortable with things we see and touch everyday. Somehow with them being in our reach all the time we start to take it for granted. We forget that nothing is promised to us without taking care of it and putting the effort into it. Don't forget the value of the people in your life.
