I read your poem and felt once again, in a place far away from my home.
I could once again hear the sounds that accompany war
I could see the bodies lying fallen on the ground, some injured, some dead, some scared, some waiting for an opportunity to move safely forward
I could see myself 'staying low" but, never finding a place to remove myself and hide myself from the fray and my other comrades, as we depended on each other
And never once, did I entertain the thought of running away, even though I was as scared of dying as any other man on that field of battle because, I had my Lord with me.

absolutely. great response. i have many similarities to your experience. it's a poem of pride. patri.. read moreabsolutely. great response. i have many similarities to your experience. it's a poem of pride. patriotism, but yet still terrifying. you know you have options, and sometimes they sound enticing, but you know you can't oblige. Sometimes you help, sometimes you save, and sometimes you can only stay low as a whole. do or die. run away is more of a reference to "be taken" than physical running. but again, it's open to interpretation which is what i try most to do
War is an awful thing for anyone to face, let alone those who serve. May God be with those who served their country in times of war. Interesting read GLB.

A powerful poem. Deep thoughts and dangerous places.
"Run away. Run away and stay low. Run away
Run away. Run away and stay low. Or just run away."
The poem reminded me of my dear Grandmother words. "Better to be a live chicken, than a dead hero. We lost too many to the old wars". Thank you for sharing the outstanding poetry.

This is rather good. There is a fine balance of understatement and overstatement here, though it is subtle. The sentiment of it manages to stay at persuasive and objective distance and yet there is a genuine sense of something personal in experience which has essential vitality. This gets to the core of emotion which is "fight or flight" in battle that is closer to human reality than any such poetically-licensed words normally do. Truly "run away" is the prevailing rationale which supersedes the strategic logic of "stay low".
