That Demon Weed

A poem about the history of cannabis, why it was made illegal, and why it is ridiculous.

Back in the day, when I was young and not a stoner,

I remember what was said, 'If you smoke that plant you'll be a loner.'

unproductive and lazy not a societal donor,'

the government and media have spent billions to bemoan her.

But little do most people know about the war on drugs,

the marijuana industry is pigeonholed by these thugs.

Scheduled 1 by the DEA and defined with 'no accepted medical use,

this plant is rather scary and has high potential for abuse!'

If cannabis is so scary and has no medicinal use,

why is there a patent from the government,

go ahead, let me hear your excuse?

In the 2003 patent the government said that cannibinoids could be useful,

and according to the research all their testing had been fruitful.

So why do they continue this ill-fated war on weed,

I do not know for sure, but here's my opinion so take heed:

The government values profit over life and those in need,

they've banned a medicine they know works, to satisfy their greed.

As Macklemore has preached the opioid crisis is in full swing,

people are overdosing, leaving behind their dreams.

Government and big pharma ensure that weed cannot be used,

to treat the list of ailments addressed by their drugs that are abused.

Instead of all the pills that can kill us before remission,

shouldn't we all have the option to use marijuana for these conditions.

So why is weed illegal from a federal and most states point of view,

When all the research shows the negative claims are all untrue?

Back in the Thirties commissioner Anslinger changed his mind,

you see he previously believed that smoking marijuana was just fine.

'There is no more absurd fallacy', than it making people violent,

is what he used to believe before his canna-support grew silent.

No one knows what changed his mind or if he was paid off,

but he used his position of power to say, 'Enough is enough!'

He used the case of Victor Licata murdering his family to feed,

a lie that you turn into a 'wild beast', if you smoke that 'demon weed'.

He had no evidence to back his claim so asked thirty scientists to bestow,

a claim that weed was dangerous, but 29 of the 30 said no!

He touted that one scientist that said weed did not belong,

and the media used his reference and the murder to cheer us on.

As a society we were frightened into believing what they said,

and marijuana was banned, due to the threat of bloodshed?

A few years down the road and Licata's case files were reviewed,

to everyone's astonishment, the findings did exclude:

Any details of marijuana or evidence of its use,

it was evident he never smoked weed and it was just used as an excuse.

So now you know the facts behind the reason weed is banned,

and why they keep it from us, do you truly understand?

Why would they allow us to heal ourselves with a miracle plant,

when they have all of these contracts with big pharma we'd supplant.

It's all about the money, as the saying goes,

And the number of cannabis related deaths still stands at zero.

There's no money in finding cures or treating all your pain,

So they keep us sick and dying to ensure their financial gain.
