Honey Dripper Catfish Pie

Honey Dripper Catfish Pie

A Poem by Jim W White

Ingredients:

1 freshly caught sole of a daddy fish
1 mean Boss-man Viper, smoked
 6 old guitar strings
9 dirty fingers
1/2 teaspoon voodoo magic
1 teaspoon dark honey

Pre-heat oven to eighteen hundred and
Slam in your sole.
Throw the body in whole:
We’ll eat every portion of the sucker.

Leave him sweat for a life-time, then
Remove the skin,
Leave organs in.
Take not apart –waste the heart alone.

Boil-up the fish-flesh along with
Serpentine meat,
The sharp, salty-venom will sweeten.
Fangs helpless as the water softens his jaw.

Mix in there, the honey and voodoo
To sweeten and bind
The kidnapped, beaten and blind,
Licking spoons clean of crude, thick sugar.

Use fingers to turn it all through, feeling
Texture of -how long? Voices and drums:
Deep-South slow song as
Loose linger fragrances of fugitive homes.

Sieve the mix through steel strings,
Cover with a crust; Et Voila!
Lost Brothers caked in dust,
With a New World flavour of highways.

I thought of Ron as I read this. . . I see he found his way here already and enjoyed it. Nice bluesy feel. I went down south for a few days last spring. From Tuscaloosa, ALabama to Natchitoches, Lousisiana. I almost imagine I could hear these words down along some slow-moving river.

Sounds like rebirth to me. On a bed of rice. And a sheaf of new lyrics for pudding. Nice one. Enjoyed.
