Valle Mortis.

Valle Mortis.

A Poem by M.K. JOSEPH
"

For I was one before we became two...three then none.

"
Brought from the ashes
Rescued from the abyss
Out of misery of life
I knelt before his throne
Envying his awesome robe
But never to touch it

Before he said a word
Everyone fell to worship
And chatted long live his lordship
Under the oath he spoke
Terrifying his listeners
Yet moving them to fight back

The messenger had the news
Though nobody wanted to hear
The enemy was near
Half of the kingdom was gone

For half a time I knelt there
Still hadn't even touched my hair
I would live to fight another day
Though bad news I'd brought today
A commander, yet no army

We'd been ambushed in the valley
The valley of death that no one dared reach
Though I had braved my soldiers to match on
Now their blood was in my hands
My men, whom I'd led to death

The king then spoke again
His voice though brittle
His eyes dead as the fallen
Whose spirits had fled
Yet still with us, crying for vengeance

Who will fight for what's ours?
Who will drive the demon from the land?

One hand shot up first
A woman, beautiful as the morning glory
When she stepped forward, my heart sank
And sorrow filled me at her vulnerability
I'd failed her!

I'd failed to everyone!

'I will fight by the king's side'
Her voice was courageous
And without a doubt
I knew she meant war
For I'd known her and unconditionally adore

I wanted to beg her not to come
But women and children is all we had left
Be slaves or fight to death
Everyone knew our fate
And as I looked at her face, I knew this was for us

For she spoke with a renewed zeal
And a hope for tomorrow
And I sensed she knew something I didn't

Two weeks and a half
The whole village matched forward
Young boys front
Girls and women centre
and the old yonder

I looked back again
Her gorgeous smile flashed at me
How beautiful she'd become
Ever since we met
And the memories made my face wet
My spirit was lifted

She was my all, my world
The reason I had fought next to the king
To give her a better future
But never once did I think it would be like this
I was scared, she wouldn't so well fair

As I slowed down so she could catch up
I saw a change I hadn't noticed
A glow on her face and smoother skin
Then it became dark
The sun disappeared above the cloud of flying sticks
And to whom they fell on, screamed and fell

The demons were on us again
The ambush was nearer than we'd thought
Men and women yelled, children shrieked in pain
I looked to my side
There lay my bride

I carried her to the riverside
Away from the flying arrows
Though I knew she'd been hit
I wasn't prepared for what came next
She whispered into my ears, before breathing her last

The words lingered in my head
I was going to be a father
In four months, had the war not started

If going back to the abyss is all it took
I would return for my wife and unborn son
To avenge them
To the valley of death
Where once I'd escaped death
And there I would face it again

For I lived no more
Nothing was left to lose
More than what I'd lost now
A big part of me was gone
And I wished to unite with it again

In the next life.
