My Aunt Mary

My Aunt Mary

A Poem by Kenny Carcaterra

There is a little circle
that I keep around me
and those that I love
who also love me.
And the circle is small
because it's hard to love me,
and too soon will be smaller
because you're leaving me.
Won't have you to call me "lovey",
won't see you sippin' tea,
won't have your loving heart
that never once condemned me
or your tender soul
that never once judged me.

I know the tears I cry
are tears I cry for me,
and when I think of losing you
those tears could form a sea.
You saved my life
by loving me for me.
You saw past my faults and sins
and saw only good in me.
You saw past my fractured shell
and never rejected me.
I'll miss you more than you could ever know.
Who could take your place with me?
Who would see through this broken shell
to see what you could see?

(Authors note:  My Aunt Mary passed away on March 18th, 2008.  I was fortunate enough to have given her this poem before she passed.  She was an amazing person.  I will always miss her.)
