I Do WonderA Poem by Marvin Thomas Cox-Flynn de GrahamWe The People of America have never been so pitted against one another in the history of our nation, for even the opposing sides of the Civil War treated one another with more respect than do we ...I Do Wonder Written By Marvin Thomas Cox-Flynn de Graham Copyright © 2022 Marvin Thomas Cox DBA: Marvin Thomas Cox-Flynn de Graham All Rights Reserved I do wonder … I do wonder what this world is coming to, when men cannot sit down together, over a cup of coffee, over a cold beer, and seriously contemplate, intelligently meditate, simply conversate over matters of opinion that hold sway within their hearts.
One to fervently think this way, the other to fervently think that, in diametrically opposed ways of fervent opinion and belief, with both men smiling, eye to eye and heart to heart, in seeking answers to problems common to them both, common to their peoples, as a nation of brethren citizens.
Yes, I said brethren citizens, perhaps in heat of debate to make the mind salivate, to make the pulse agitate, diligently seeking for answers, but without that animosity of viewing our brethren as wrong thinking enemies, simply because they do hold to different opinion's beliefs, viewpoints opposed to our own on matters important to us -- one and all.
How did it ever come to be that we are no longer free to speak, one to the other, without fear of isolation, or emasculation's polarization?
How did it ever come to be that both you and me have become blinded to our common reality, a reality -- as a nation of People -- that dictates (an inner voice once heard) you and I are on the same side, though we may hold forth different ideas of solutions to the very problems most common to us all as One People of One nation?
Why has it become wrong to be Right or to be Left? Why has it become wrong to be Liberal, to be Conservative, to be Socialist, or even Communist, to be Straight or be Gay to be Religious, Agnostic, or Atheist, to be a Patriot, but aptly point out, to one and to all before we fall, the travesties of our nation's flaws?
Why has it become wrong to simply agree to disagree while you and I, you and me, seek solutions to problems in our individual individuality of thinking free and openly, argue yes, but not as enemies?
Why has it become wrong if we, sitting across from one another, seek a common answer's solution to problems common to us all as brethren of one and the same nation of people as equal citizens who simply hold fervently to different points of view?
I do wonder … I do wonder how brethren citizens can view each other with animosity, can treat one another as enemies, can hope to see our nation stand in the face of any coming adversity, be it disaster of War or Plague, if our greatest enemy is you and I pitted, one against the other, rather than seeking answers as a nation's brethren of citizens, mothers, fathers, sisters, and brothers?
I do wonder why we fail to remember the words of President Abraham Lincoln? “A house divided against itself cannot stand.”
