Within The Well Lit Shadows Of Silence

Within The Well Lit Shadows Of Silence

A Poem by Marvin Thomas Cox-Flynn de Graham
"

Cyanide is a merciful killer, for it kills one quickly and mercifully. But grief and loss of a loved one is most cruel as it takes your life one moment, one day, one tear at time ...

Here I sit,

dumbfounded and stupefied

at the very thought of it,

my eyes literally blinded,

by the shadows of you gone,

all is well except for that hole,

within my chest's emptiness,

of a heart ripped and torn in twain,

by your loving presence, forlorn ...

Death has cruelly taken you,

leaving my life shattered and broken,

in two of ever so hopelessly askew:

You said you would never leave me,

but so sadly, my love, you did,

because you are dead and gone,

like so many others slaughtered

by the man-made killer called Covid,

as the virus took your life too,

but what am I supposed to do,

what am I supposed to do with you gone,

and no song to sing of your return?

Forty nine years we were together,

since that Sunday afternoon in Newman Park,

and when we met that most magical day,

I was nineteen and you only fifteen years old.

You had turned sweet sixteen a mere five days,

when we married and not because we had to,

but because we were madly in love.

____________

Within the well lit shadows,

of silence, I sit, alone, with you gone,

and pine away in tears day after day,

but it shan't be for long,

no it shan't be for long,

not for long, before I too am gone,

for I am utterly lost without you:

the love and light of my life,

Irma -- my true love ...

I am so very sorry for the loss of your beloved wife. What a hollow, what a shadow falls over your life without her beside you. This is a very touching tribute Marvin. Brought a tear to my eye thinking about both you and all the other families who lost a loved one due to covid. My sister lost her husband a year ago to the same virus. I know hard hard her struggle is. Take care.

Chris.

A beautiful and loving tribute. Words will always fall short at such profound loss, but the emotions are often the guide to understanding the greatness of love and its brevity in this world that is eternal. Your heartfelt poem speaks to the nature of this.
