Statue Head of Zeus

Our puny lives do not last forever,

though, in our youth, we wished to believe

that we, indeed, shall live forever,

having surrounded ourselves with Blind Faith's

supportive girdles to shore up our doubts,

to gloss over the loopholes

in desperation's reasoning,

that frankly, candidly, and most brutally,

have always told us otherwise:

One day, we all shall die.

The question always remains:

When, or why?

Why is it that we die,

when we long so to live,

now and forever without end?

Alas, self deception shall not forestall

that which is most certainly inevitable,

as wishing and hoping to never die,

shall never see a one of us live forever,

no matter how spiritual or religious we are:

Death shall devour us, one and all,

and the grave shall turn our bodies to dust

in duly undeniable but certain time,

for even the gods, themselves, die,

as there remains not a single ancient god,

for one to behold with mind, or heart, or eye,

for even the gods die ...

even the gods die, yes, even they do.
We want to live forever or do we?
If we could stay young maybe....but I am getting to that age, on the verge of falling into those years where I could possibly not take of myself anymore...I don't want that...don't need that....
Maybe I could play some pinochle with gods...the other ones who died.

There is a simple reason for our death that gives our life meaning. By limiting its scope we learn the value every moment. Those who go through their lives and don’t grasp this come to the end of it too late they realize I should’ve went to my son‘s game I should’ve seen that first home run There is one thing that makes a man great it is the difference between selflessness and selfishness

Good morning,
First read of yours..and, I did enjoy your words..
Yes, as I am getting older..74 years now, I ponder death and think...oh gosh, I have so much more I want to do...
Your poem made me think and that is always good.
