‘WICKED WOODS’-SCREENPLAY BY MASON STEPHENS

                        FADE IN:

EXT. SCHOOL

The school building sits silently. No

kids roaming around. A caption at the

bottom of screen reads; *City, Arkansas

1960.The words fade out.

The school bell rings. Kids pile out of

the front door. Two girls walk to a tall

tree that sits on a hill next to the edge

of the woods. CANDICE HAWK, short in height,

fit, brown hair, brown eyes, wears a pink

flowery dress with a white shawl. TAYLOR

GUNNER is dressed in a light blue dress. She’s

thin, brown skin, black hair, brown eyes.

CANDICE leans up against the tree. TAYLOR

sits down on the tire that hangs by a rope

tied to a high branch,

              TAYLOR

The dance is tomorrow night.

              CANDICE
Hunter asked me out.

              TAYLOR
I don’t even have a date.

              CANDICE
I’m not going. You know

what tomorrow is.

              TAYLOR
Yeah, the dance.

              CANDICE

It’s the anniversary of

the witch’s burning.

              TAYLOR
The witch’s burning?

              CANDICE
Yeah, the townspeople burnt

the witch that lives in the

shack in the woods.

TAYLOR shrugs. CANDICE pulls

some lipstick from her pocket and

begins applying it.

              CANDICE
Well, they burnt her. Said

she was a witch.  The next

day, the tree they burnt her

on was healed and she was gone.

TAYLOR’S expression is shocked,

scared.

              CANDICE
I think it’s real. I also

think she still lives in that

shack.

              TAYLOR
Candice, that’s a bunch

of bull.

CANDICE snaps the lid back on the lipstick

and bends down in front of TAYLOR.

              CANDICE
Do my lips look ok, Taylor?

TAYLOR nods. CANDICE turns around and begins

walking up the hill towards the woods.

              CANDICE (YELLING)
C’mon, Taylor, let’s go!

TAYLOR leaps up and runs after CANDICE.

                        CUT TO:

EXT. TRAIL IN WOODS

CANDICE and TAYLOR are walking the

dirt trail that’s surrounded by

trees, vines, and bushes. They’re

walking side-by-side.

              TAYLOR
Why are we walking through

the woods?

              CANDICE
I have to drop by Miss Lenzie’s

house. My sister’s there visiting

her son.

              TAYLOR
How old is Cynthia?

              CANDICE
She’s 9 this December.

              TAYLOR
She’s so shy.

              CANDICE
I know.

There’s a ‘crack’ sound in the

woods to the girls’ right. They stop

and look through the woods. An old shack

sits not too far from them.

              TAYLOR (WHISPERING)

I-Is that, th-the witch’s house?

              CANDICE (WHISPERING)
I think so.

CANDICE moves off of the trail and into

the trees. She looks back at TAYLOR.

              CANDICE (WHISPERING)
Let’s go.

CANDICE moves her hand back and forth signaling

TAYLOR to follow. TAYLOR is bouncing up and down

nervously.

              TAYLOR
I’m not sure...

              CANDICE
It’s fine.

CANDICE and TAYLOR bend down close to the ground

and walk toward the old, ragged shack. They reach

the front door. They are still bent down, exchanging

glances while looking up at the window on the door.

              TAYLOR (WHISPERING)
We’re gonna get caught, and

I’m blaming you when I die.

              CANDICE (WHISPERING)
Let’s see if she’s home.

CANDICE stands up, smiling. She raises her fist and

knocks on the door. She looks down at TAYLOR. TAYLOR

just looks up at her. CANDICE stands there for a moment.

Nobody comes to the door. TAYLOR stands up and looks

at CANDICE, hatefully. TAYLOR puts her hands on her hips.

              TAYLOR
Let’s go.

              CANDICE
No.

              TAYLOR
She’s not home.

              CANDICE
Exactly.

CANDICE turns to the door and slowly places

her hand on the rusty doorknob with no lock

hole in it. She twists it.

              TAYLOR
Don’t!

              CANDICE

Shh...

CANDICE pushes the door open.

INT. WITCH’S SHACK-DARK

The shack is dark, the floors

are dirt. CANDICE enters, TAYLOR
follows.

               CANDICE

Is there a light switch?

TAYLOR strains her eyes on the wall. She touches

the wall. She quickly jerks it back.

              TAYLOR
I just touched something hairy.

CANDICE walks to a window, covered with a

black plastic. She tears the plastic off. The

sunlight shines in, revealing black, hairy spiders

that cover the wall. A table sits in front of the

far wall. Jars are covering it. Brown liquid, red

liquid, gooey, nasty things are in them. TAYLOR
screams. The front door shuts before she can run out.

TAYLOR looks to CANDICE.

              CANDICE

No... open the door.

TAYLOR pulls on the door hard.

              TAYLOR
It won’t come open!

              CANDICE
Move back!

TAYLOR backs away. CANDICE raises her

leg and kicks the door down. TAYLOR and

CANDICE run out of it.

behind her. She stands up and opens it. CANDICE

              CANDICE

CANDICE and CYNTHIA continue walking.

              CYNTHIA

Ken Lenzie told me about the

witch in the woods.

CANDICE looks at CYNTHIA.

              CANDICE
Don’t listen to him. The

witch isn’t real.

              CYNTHIA
Ken Lenzie said she was.

CANDICE stops and moves in front of

CYNTHIA. CANDICE bends down and holds

on to CYNTHIA’S right hand with her

right hand.

              CANDICE

Ken Lenzie or anybody else.

They’re wrong.

              CANDICE
Here!

MISS MILLS writes a check mark on the paper

attached to the clipboard.

              MISS MILLS
Taylor Gunner?

MISS MILLS scans the room.

              MISS MILLS

              CYNTHIA
Where’s Taylor?

              CANDICE

I think she’s sick.

CYNTHIA nods.

              CYNTHIA
Can you show me the witch’s

shack?

              CANDICE (SHOCKED)
Cynthia, I told you to forget

about it. It’s not true.

              CYNTHIA
Jacob showed me pictures!

              CANDICE
Fine.

trees is the witch’s shack.

              CANDICE
See, Cynthia?

CANDICE looks behind her to where

CYNTHIA should be. She’s gone. CANDICE

backs up into a tree. Blood drips on

CANDICE’S head. CANDICE looks up. A

woman in a bloody white dress is hanging

high in the tree. CANDICE screams and

runs back toward the trail. She trips

over a branch. CYNTHIA bends down next

to her. CYNTHIA taps on CANDICE’S

shoulder. CANDICE quickly looks up

at CYNTHIA. CANDICE just smiles.

                        CUT TO:

Thank you, mother.

              TAYLOR
Are you still sick?

              CANDICE
A little, I’ll get over it.

I have an idea though.

              TAYLOR

What now?

CANDICE takes her backpack off of her

back and sits it on her legs. She unzips

it and pulls out a camcorder.

              TAYLOR
What are you going to do

with that?

              CANDICE
I want to see the witch.

TAYLOR smiles and slaps her hand over

her mouth.

              TAYLOR
You gotta be kidding me?

              CANDICE
Nope.

TAYLOR moves her hand and frowns.

              TAYLOR
Well you can leave me out

of it.

CANDICE stands up and picks her backpack

up. She throws her backpack over her shoulder

and faces TAYLOR

              CANDICE
Fine, then I’ll do it by

myself.

tree. She has her backpack

on her back. She reaches up

to a limb and begins to climb up

it. She reaches a limb on the

middle of the tree. She sits

down on the branch and unzips

her backpack. A crow lands on

the branch beside her. She stops

what she’s doing and looks at it.

A group of crows attack her. She

Screams and slaps at them. One tugs

at her ear, ripping a piece off. She

falls off the branch and screams as

she falls. She hits the ground. The

crows all stay seated in the tree’s

branches. CANDICE lies there unconscious.

A woman creeps up slowly to the tree.

She’s wearing a hood, we can’t see

her face. She’s dressed in a long

dull-looking skirt, old pair of slip-ons

and a shawl with the hood on her head.

She looks down at the unconscious CANDICE,

then up at the tree. We reveal her ugly,

burnt face.

The witch bends down next to CANDICE

and lifts her head off of the leafy

ground.

                        CUT TO:

TAYLOR hangs the phone up on the bedside

table.

              TAYLOR
No.

WANDA frowns and pats TAYLOR’S legs.

              WANDA
Well, you need to get to bed.

We have church in the morning.

her chin up on her arms and closes

her eyes. A tear drops down her cheek.

We hear the bathroom door open. TAYLOR
jumps. She bends down on the floor and

looks under the door. Nobody’s there.

She sits back on the toilet. She begins

shaking a little. She looks through the

crack between the stall door and the wall.

An old woman swoops in and looks back at

TAYLOR. Her eye is *scary colored*.

TAYLOR shuts her eyes tightly and puts

her hands over her face. TAYLOR sits there

for a moment. She slowly removes her hand

from her face. Mascara is running down her

face. She looks through the crack again. The

witch is gone.

              TAYLOR
Hello?

TAYLOR moves closer to the crack. She stands

up and dusts he dress off. She unlatches the

stall and opens the door. A little girl is

to her bedroom door and closes her eyes and

takes a deep breath. She grabs the door

knob and pulls open the door. Her mother

is standing there. WANDA’S eyes are dark

underneath. She looks terrible. She’s pale

and sickly looking. TAYLOR touches WANDA’S

arm.

              TAYLOR
Mom? Are you ok?

WANDA coughs and blood spews out onto the

floor and on TAYLOR’S shirt. WANDA collapses

to the floor. TAYLOR quickly bends down next

to her. A tear drops down TAYLOR’S cheek.

              TAYLOR
Mom?

TAYLOR looks up at the window on the other

side of the room. The witch is standing

outside the window, looking at TAYLOR and

her dead mother. TAYLOR stands up and walks

over her mother. She walks as if she’s walking

to the door, which is past the window. TAYLOR
stops at the window and glares at the witch,

then marches out of the door.

INT. STAIRWAY
TAYLOR runs up the stairs. She walks to a gun

cabinet that stands against the wall. She opens

it up and pulls a pistol that is hanging is sitting

on the shelf. She admires it in her hand, then takes

off back down the stairs.

EXT. FRONT PORCH

Taylor slowly opens the front door. Her gun is raised

and ready to fire. She has a lit cigarette in her mouth.

She looks around the yard. It’s empty. TAYLOR’S eyes are

filled with rage. TAYLOR removes the cigarette from her

mouth with her free hand and drops it on the ground,

stepping on it with her foot.

                        CUT TO:

EXT. WOODS

horrifying and she’s as ugly as

ever.

CYNTHIA’S smile breaks into an expressionless

look.

EXT. BACK DOOR OF CANDACE’S HOME
CYNTHIA breaks through the door and runs up

a small hill and into the woods.

EXT. WITCH’S SHACK
It’s getting darker outside. TAYLOR
is looking through the window. CANDACE
is strapped to a table in the center of

the room. A crow’s evil call sounds behind

TAYLOR. TAYLOR jumps and turns around to

a large tree, filled with black crows,

perching on every branch. TAYLOR closes her

eyes. We move to show the right of her face.

A giant, ugly, deformed man, CLOVIS, stands on the

other side of her. He raises a gun at TAYLOR’S

head.

EXT. POV FROM TREE

The crows are perched on the branches. A gunshot

is heard from the distance.

                        CUT TO:

INT. SHACK

CANDACE is lying on the table, her eyes wide open.

She looks like she’s gone mad. Her head is

being held in place. A drop of water is dripping

on her forehead. Her mouth is sewn shut. The water

drips in the same place every time. She tries

to scream. She strains to open her mouth. She

calms down some. CANDACE opens her mouth and the

stitches rip. A little blood flows down her chin

and across her face. Some falls into her mouth.

              CANDACE (SCREAMING)
Let me out! Let me out!

CANDACE lies there and screams and sobs. CLOVIS

barges in the door. CANDACE shuts up.

He’s dragging TAYLOR by her left foot. He

drops her foot and looks at CANDACE.

              CANDACE (SOBBING, WHISPERING)
Please, help me!

CLOVIS looks at her for a moment, in a sincere way.

The witch walks through the door. He turns to her

and bows his head a little. The witch smiles at

him. She moves close to CLOVIS and touches his

arm with her wrinkly hand.

              WITCH
Clovis, go feed Clive the

girl. I’m sure he’s starving.

CLOVIS nods. He bends down and grabs TAYLOR’S

leg and drags her out of the shack. The WITCH

walks over to another table that is covered in

jars of disgusting body parts and liquids.

The WITCH picks up a box and carries it to

the bed that CANDACE lies on. She sits it on

CANDACE’S stomach. She reaches in the box

and pulls out a long knife. A symbol is engraved

on the handle. She puts the blade to CANDACE’S

forearm.

              CANDACE
Please, don’t.

The WITCH cuts CANDACE’S arm. THE WITCH puts

the knife back in the box and pulls out a

vial from her pocket. She opens it up and

puts it to CANDACE’S cut. The blood run into

the vial.

                        CUT TO:

Trash is everywhere in this open area in

the woods. CLOVIS is walking through it.

He stops and observes something in front

of him that’s close to the ground. CLOVIS
bends down and we reveal a cage with a pale

little creature. It’s CLIVE. CLIVE is extremely

skinny and helpless. CLOVIS pulls a jar from

his pocket. It has something that is bloody

in it. It looks similar to a human brain.

CLOVIS opens up the cage and sets the jar

in their slowly. CLIVE quickly latches onto

CLOVIS with his teeth. CLOVIS screams. CLIVE
let’s go of CLOVIS. CLOVIS has blood running

off of his hand. CLOVIS stands up and shakes

his hand. He puts his wound to his mouth. CLIVE
crawls out of the cage and runs off into the

woods. CLOVIS watches him run off into the forest.

                        CUT TO:

EXT. TREE
CYNTHIA is sitting next to a tree. She has

a leaf in her hand. She’s crunching it up.

Something screams not too far away. She jumps

a little. She looks around. CLIVE comes out

from behind the tree. CYNTHIA screams and stands

up. She begins running through the woods. She

looks back to see if CLIVE’S following and

falls down a hill.

EXT. HILL

She rolls fast down the hill

and hits a tree, hard.

EXT. TOP OF HILL
CLIVE is looking down the hill at the unconscious

CYNTHIA. CLIVE crawls down the hill. When he

reaches CNYTHIA, he looks at her confusingly. He

smiles.

              CLOVIS
Clive!

CLIVE looks behind him quickly. CLOVIS is standing

at the top of the hill. CLOVIS is pointing his gun

at CLIVE. CLIVE shakes his head. CLOVIS laughs and

pulls the trigger. CLIVE is now lying on top of CYNTHIA.
CLIVE was shot in the stomach. Blood is pouring out

of his stomach. CLIVE leans up slowly. He coughs up

blood. Behind him, CYNTHIA is bleeding from her chest.
She was shot as well.

                        CUT TO:

INT. WITCH’S SHACK

The witch is standing next to a large pot full of

brown liquid. She untwists the vial full of CANDACE’S

blood and dumps it into the pot. She drops the vial

beside her feet and picks up a large spoon. She begins

stirring. CLOVIS barges in the room. The WITCH turns

around to him and smiles.

              CLOVIS
CLIVE dead.

The WITCH’S smile fades.

              WITCH
What?

CLOVIS points to his stomach with his

index finger.

              CLOVIS
I shoot.

The witch drops the spoon in the pot.

She turns completely around to CLOVIS.

She reaches in her pocket and slings

Whatever she got at CLOVIS. CLOVIS

now has a knife in his heart. He looks

down at the knife panicky. He pulls

it out and watches the blood pour out

of his chest. CLOVIS falls down dead.

CANDACE’S hand is nailed into the table.

She slowly pulls her left hand up. After

she pulls gets her hand loose, she pulls

the other one loose. She removes the tape

slowly from her face. She leans up and

pulls her feet loose from the nails. She

steps off of the table and limps to the

back of the room. She grabs a hatchet

hanging by a nail on the wall. She turns

around and the WITCH is standing there,

face-to-face with CANDACE. CANDACE screams

and pushes the WITCH back about a foot.
CANDACE raises the hatchet and brings it

down on the witch’s head. CANDACE looks

at the WITCH for a moment without doing

anything else. CANDACE pulls the hatchet

out of the WITCH’S head and drops it on

the floor. The WITCH has a deep slash

on her forehead. Blood is running down

her face. The WITCH falls to the floor.

CANDACE breathes heavily. CANDACE’s eyes

shut and she passes out. She falls to the

ground, right next to the WITCH. The WITCH
is a light gray color now. She slowly begins

to become lighter, until she bursts

into blood all over the floor and on

CANDACE.

                        CUT TO:

bloody and it’s raining, some. She’s

very bloody. She keeps walking the

road.

As the credits go on, CANDACE continues

walking. She passes a large tree. CANDACE
walks on some more. From behind the tree,
