Outdoors and Outgoing

A Story by U N I C O R N S AND Z E B R A S

When I was younger my family and I would always be outdoors. From ever since I can remember I was outside with my family camping and having a fun time. We would have huge bonfires, go fishing in the Brandywine river, go tubing down the Brandywine river. Everything we did while I was growing up we always did it outdoors. Sometimes we would jump off the rope swing. My family was not the type to go camping and just sit there for days at a time. We would always have to do something.Seems like that’s all we ever did, camping, having fun, growing up. Maybe that is all we did when I was a child, but that is what has shaped our family the way it is now.

Without all of those times we camped at my Grandfather’s house right off of the Brandywine river, lost our tents to flood waters, rope swung off of the rope swing, slid down the waterslide, or laughed going down the waterfalls in our inner-tubes we would not be as adventurous as we now are. My Grandfather owns 16 Acres of land right off of the Brandywine river that is over dominated by and that’s always where we camped. During the summer’s we would practically live down there, at my grandfathers. During weekends that we had stuff going on that we had to be home we would stop by our campsite and make sure it is perfect. My parents were always weird about leaving their tents there for long periods of time. Perhaps this is because they have lost a lot of tents to the Floodwaters that they have there. Because it is exceptionally easy for the river to overflow. Sometimes my brother, my cousins and I would all start a project; one year we tried to build a treehouse. It didn’t work, but we still gave it our all. We went out there and always gave it our all. Those were the days where we could be angry at someone for something but still go out there and have a blast with our family.

When my father was a kid him and his brother put up a rope swing and it is still there now. Throughout my childhood we would rope swing off on to the water. That is more fun then you can imagine. Just getting the thrill of jumping into the air from a rope. You have to be very trustworthy on where you drop, and you have to trust that the rope will hold you. Fat chance of that since the rope is over 30 years old. About 10 years ago my Grandfather put in a ‘redneck’ waterslide, it is this black piece of piping and hooked it up in the water to bring up the water and send it down the slide. It is so much fun. My Grandfather also has these inner-tubes that he puts air in and puts us in a dump truck and drives us up stream about 10-15 minutes and going down in the Tubes it takes at least an hour. That includes walking time and laughing going down the waterfalls. I know my family we usually walk back up the waterfall and go down together.

We don’t go to my Grandfather’s much anymore, but we still are proactive in giving it our all. We recently have gone Caving as a family, well just my brother, my father and I; my mom will not go in a cave because of the astronomical amount of mud, so she stayed home. But recently, my family have been going camping with Venture Crew (Association of Boy Scouts of America) and Boy Scouts since my father is the Scoutmaster.

All of this is reasons of why the Woodward Family’s voice is outgoing and Outdoors we always try to have fun and go all out when we are outdoors. That’s why I would call it outgoing. The Woodward’s love to be outside and be loud and enjoy it all to the fullest. When we are outside we always give it our all and we always make things more fun than it actually could be, all in all my family is what has shaped me as the adventurous person that I am.
