The Foodchain

The Foodchain

A Poem by M.Ruby

Envy from a distance.
Don't get too close.
Their stares bite.
And later so will their words.
Observe, but please don't touch the glass.

Step aside, keep your head down.
Don't provoke them.
So long as you play dead,
They won't even see you.
Acknowledgment is earned.
For now, invisibility is protection

You watch on with fascination.
You and your friends mock them, earnestly
I'd hate to be them
They're annoying, anyway
Who cares?
But your eyes betray your mouths
They're impossible to ignore
Thank God their glass is soundproof
You silently think.

You all know you're their biggest fans, anyway

And then the bell rings
A cacophony of scraping chairs
Clattering trays and barks and shouts fill the dining hall.
The large pack of pretty girls and boys
Who you've been eyeing for the past half hour
Are the first to leave
They abandon their table, strewn with rubbish

Who knew they were such messy eaters?
