A Testament to Love's Endurance

A Testament to Love's Endurance

A Poem by Ekai Stone
"

Exploring the depths of love and patience, this poem navigates the challenges and commitments of a deepening relationship, set against a backdrop of personal growth and uncertain futures.

"

Am I vexed with the divine, for desires unmet?

Or with myself, for not veering from fret?

Or with you, whose love I can't yet beget?

“This is all we have now,” you tenderly claim,

“Patience is needed,” the heavens proclaim,

“I could die from this grief!” I lament, not in shame.

At times, yearning and grief grips my heart with such force,

It seems to steer my life off course

Like a child crying out for recourse.

Grateful for the stars that conspired to align our fates,

Has this relentless pursuit made me a better mate?

Lucky am I, to chase a shooting star so great.

Does your heart find joy knowing you're my chosen star?

In your quiet moments, do you sense how cherished you are?

In your sky, do I too shine from afar?

“You know I want to marry you,” you softly confess at the beach,

“Will your love stand the test of time?” the heavens inquire, a lesson they teach,

“My heart yearns for her alone,” I declare, my resolve within reach.

Time swings between ally and foe,

In this quest for her heart, will 2 become 1 soul,

Or am I to linger in the shadow of her love lost long ago?

The future is unknown,

But here is what is certain:

You are worthy,

You are a treasure,

You are beauty,

You are strong,

You are resilient,

You are distinguished,

You set an example for all good women.

Hence my fiery passion and resolute decision.

The Future Is Uncertain,

If I lack patience for one as mighty as you,

A future without you is all that is certain.

Restraint shall be my cloak, activity my staff,

Memories will not longer bring pain, only warmth and laughs.

Such joys, steadfast, guide my heart's true path.

My desires laid bare, love boldly shown,

Now I recline, reflective, upon my own throne.

A king in waiting, not idle, but seeds sown.

Awaiting the tryst where paths intertwine,

Your journey to me, a sign divine.

For love's true test is not just the chase,

But the shared steps towards our love's embrace.

And after many years of highs and lows,

Together we'll carve a beautiful life.

Until finally, side by side, in eternal repose, names in stone,

'Here lies two victorious lovers,' the epitaph we chose.

Unsure of title. I was also thinking, "Uncertain Futures, Unwavering Hearts".
Narrative poetry with elements of lyrical poetry. Do you feel the need for more dialogue for the emotional reflection and existential questions?

Your focus on rhyming is steering you astray, and causing you to place in lines that have no relationship to the situation other than to provide the necessary rhyme, as though rhyming is the purpose of structured poetry. But the rhyme must be an accent, a means of providing cadence, and so, must fit the thought perfectly.

Added to that there's a LOT to writing structured poetry that's not obvious, like making use of prosidy, and maintaining structure.

For an excellent introduction to the basics of it, head over to Amazon and read the excerpt to Stephen Fry's, The Ode Less Traveled. He'll show you things about the flow of language that you never expected. That intro is something I recommend to all writers.

And while his book is excellent, I favor Mary Oliver's, Rules for the Dance.

Give it a try. You'll be glad you did.

Jay, thank you for your insight. I agree, too much rhyming and not even a classical sonnet way.
