The Missing Pet

The Missing Pet

A Story by Mark P.
"

The last of three flash fiction stories I did for a writer's workshop.

“Where is he?” I thought looking up at the door frantically.   “It’s time for him to be home!”   Realizing that my attempting to find him would be useless; I did the only thing I could think of.  I took a nap.   It was dark when I awoke but there was still no sign of him  It was dark when I awoke but there was still no sign of him.  “Alright” I thought he must’ve gotten side-tracked if he’s not here in the morning, then I’ll worry.

He wasn’t and I was beginning to get concerned for my pet’s safety.  After all his food and water hadn’t been touched recently and that was unusual for him; I got to be so nervous I started to pace and call his name hoping that he would hear me…he didn’t.

I had no money and now my own food was starting run dry.  I went through a variety of emotions, anger, worry, jealousy.  Where was he? It wasn’t like him to turn away food.

Time passed and I slowly began to realize that my pet may not make it back.  One day while I napped on the futon, I heard him at the door. Excitedly I ran over to greet him.  The door swung open and my human pet, Mark walked in and smiled at me.

He was damn lucky he’d brought me cat food otherwise his tardiness was unforgivable.
