Sister

Sister

A Poem by Bell Appleton
"

A poem about my twin sister.

"

Your absence haunts me

Like a malevolent presence

That towers above

Lengthening shadows

Stretching to the sky,

Eclipsing the sun.

It weighs me down,

Forceful hands pushing,

Sinking me into the ground.

And this endless night

With the stars above

Blinking shyly

Fearfully

Their brilliance slowly snuffed out

By monstrous sorrow.

See my wounded heart

Carved, butchered.

A piece is missing, hollowed,

The empty space

Throbs and aches

Like a phantom limb.

The precious bond between us

Ripped apart, chewed up

Death forcing our separation

Before the gentle dawn

Could shine and bathe us

In loving welcome.

Sister,

Though you've long since left me

A child still cries out,

Caged deep within,

Calling for her twin.

"Why did you abandon me?" she says,

"How could you leave me?"

My loneliness and undying grief

Roar like beasts

Baring their fangs

Threatening to devour me.

And though it hurts,

My heart yells each day,

The emotion resonating

Traversing muscle and bone

Earnestly proclaiming:

"I love you,

I will never forget you."
