Priscus and Verus

Priscus and Verus

A Story by Isabelle

I opened my eyes. But what I saw wasn't light. But darkness. I couldn't form an imagine in my head. I felt a rough material on my face. Then I realized, my face was covered. I waited and listened. In the distance I could hear drops of water landing on what I made out to be a cement floor. Also people, men, speaking quietly to each other. In front of me, I think, I could hear another being breathing hard. I composed myself and acted like I was still unconscious.
"We know you're awake." A voice said. I heard footsteps nearing me. A hand grabbed the hair on my head along with the sack over my head. Once it was removed my eyes seared with pain. The light above me pierced my eyes. I surveyed my surroundings. I was in what seemed to be a large room with no windows and one metal door. I thought I even saw blood stains on the wall. Two men were standing there, as well as another captive sitting in a chair in front of me. The brown sack still over their head.
"Where am I?" I questioned the strangers. Both of them looked at me but didn't respond. I glared at them, but they just laughed at my confusion. They made a step toward the other captive. I looked at her. I could tell it was a girl because the way she dressed. Or was it too familiar? Those shoes, that long brown hair... Violently they snatched the sack off the girl's head.
Before me was a face that was very familiar to me. I gasped in shock. What was she doing here? What was I doing here? What do these people want? The girl in front of me was Rumi! My best friend. I tried to think of every wrong turn I made, every bad decision that could have led up to this moment. I looked her up and down she didn't seem to have any injuries. Not yet at least. Her eyes were still closed and she was just waking up.
Her eyelids fluttered open. She looked at me. "Ruth? Is that you? Where are we?" She asked. The men told her to shut up.
"I don't know." Was all I said to her. I was really confused and could barely remember a thing. One man got behind me and another stepped behind Rumi.
"What do you want from us?" I demanded. I scanned the man's face who was behind Rumi. I had never seen him before. Rumi was struggling with the ropes that bound her to the chair. The man behind her took something out of his back pocket. And so did the one behind me. It was a knife. I didn't take my eyes off the knife. The stranger used the knife to free my hands from the rope. As soon as he did I jumped out of my chair towards Rumi and she did the same. We were now in the middle of the room with the two men facing us.
Both of them threw the knives in front of us. "Fight each other." The man said.
"No! We won't." Rumi said.
"If you don't we'll have to kill you." They responded. I tried to get near Rumi to whisper to her what we would do, but she already grabbed a knife.
"Rumi wait-" I said as she ran towards me with her knife. I turned and ran.
