Demonic Elephants

Demonic Elephants

A Poem by J.X. Mason

A year. Already a year.

Oh and what a year it’s been.

Jumping from distraction to distraction.

Just seeing how long the thoughts can be kept at bay with cheap thrills and childish exploits.

There is no leaving it behind. No putting it in the past.

Nothing will ever make it feel okay. Nothing will ever excersize those demons.

They will be lifelong companions.

Learning to live with them will take the entirety of my existence, but at least, for now, the drinks and the fake laughs and the tasty pills will keep them in the shadows.

Ignoring them will never make them go away, but it’s the best option for now.

“Moving on” is something elephants do when there’s no grass left.

But the elephant will always remember the man with the gun that killed her son for his bones.

She will remember the sight of blood and the sound of pain.

Move on to the next plain of grass, but

Keep the demons, dear elephant.
