The Memoir’s Splendor

The Memoir’s Splendor

A Poem by Margaret Anne Mary Moore

After Mary Oliver’s “The Summer Day”

Who designed the book? Who invented the craft of the memoir?

The memoir-the one recounting a certain season of the writer’s life,

the one following a specific narrative arc and aiming to help people.

Now it depicts moments filled with joy, laughter, and wonder.

Now it delves deeply into the obstacles she’s overcome.

I don’t exactly know what “good writing” is,

but I do know how to texture my prose and invite readers

to imagine themselves encountering thought processes,

emotions, and sensations mirroring those experienced by my narrator

while navigating her challenging yet splendiferous life.
