Sacrifice

Sacrifice

A Poem by Lydia

Our fragile lungs and tiny hearts we do not treat well
We are just careless grains of sand
Tepid water flows through my veins
I am not worthy of my own flesh and blood

I would lift you up and place you high
On a pedestal higher than Zeus or Hera
Your brilliant mind and perfect flesh
Greater than all the gods and goddesses combined

I will fan the flame of your altar
And lick the soot from the hearth
Blacken my mouth just to please you
Cut my skin deep just to bleed for you
I will pour myself out until your cup overflows with me

Let my lukewarm water turn to boiling blood
Singe my hair to make me humble in your presence
I am not worthy but I will still struggle to show you
How willing I am to sacrifice myself on your shrine
