Persistence

Persistence

A Poem by Lydia

My rage knows not
the limits of my flesh
I will resist until my last breath
I will fight until my last day
I will be no man's doormat
You'd have to kill me first

I contain multitudes
My skin is the surface of the earth
The things that have scarred me,
marred me and otherwise tried to drown me
cannot sway my orbit
will not stray my course

The mountains and canyons
I contain cry out like biblical rocks
The weather patterns rise up
from the tiny hairs on my face
My voice will rise like thunder
and men will tremble at the sight
of the lightning I create

One day sisters we will shed
our prisons of flesh and
the light that is our souls
will shine unimpeded
by the shadows of the men
who raped our bodies
willing our spirits to be broken
not knowing that we will never break
