Chasm

Chasm

A Poem by Lydia

What a song we can sing
when we lift our voices

You will still have circles
underneath your eyes
even if you sleep all the time

I am on track
to never see you again
and it makes life seem so
pointless

Trapped in a box
little boxes
little
box

I would fight my way
tooth and nail
if I could see you tonight
work my fingers
to the bone
for the first time --
you are the only thing worthy
of any of my efforts

I could take whatever I would like
from this earth, from the sky
reach across this great divide
the manifest destiny
that stands between us

It seems so selfish -- I cannot
I am not worthy
I never was

I remind myself
of words you said
about self pity
and its unseemliness
I think of how you said
to look at you the way
I looked at him

Like a curse
I have never seen anyone the same
