Carvings

Carvings

A Poem by Lydia

The steam rises off the pavement
as if to confirm yet again
that this is surely hell on Earth

Doomed here to roam
I feel my immortality
my past lives
my past lies
all wash over me in waves
like sheets of rain

It is as though I cannot even try to be happy
Knowing that everything must, can, and will come to an end

I did not agree to this

Time passes as it laughs at us
ten years gone by
fast as you can blink an eye
fast as your car speeds by
far away from here

This too shall pass
the bad times
and the good --
still the memories flash like
a million city lights
in my rearview mirror

If only, if only
my soul's longing will not cease
I have felt it through the ages
in one form and in the next
forever etched upon me
