Safe Words

Safe Words

A Poem by Lydia

I called and she answered,
Laughing
Asking, sorry, who is this?
Like the sound of my voice
Wasn't a constant sound
Every day
Ten years ago.
The beginning of the end,
We always knew it was.
But tonight must have been the end of the end.
Broken hearted in an instant,
I replied with my name
And she told me about
How her phone
Did this weird thing
To the numbers
And she was out right now
Sorry
And I'm sure she won't remember
To call me back
And I'm sure I won't remember
It in ten more years
But right now I am standing on the edge
And her voice
Even if it didn't say the right things
Has saved me once again.

I'm not sure what this is about, and I like that.

Loneliness? Maybe something like that?
