Chapter Seven : Walking Home II

"

Mia gets to know how Ace just a little better.

"

A cold breeze blew by as Mia turned her head back, long locks of brown scattering around her face as they followed the direction of the breeze . . . to whom she was facing. The glow of the lights lit up the side of her cheek as she looked at Ace, who only stood a few feet away with a playful grin, half of his face also somewhat brightened by the glow of the lights as well. The river shuffled as a silence between them passed. The stars remained as still as they always were in the sky. Shhhhh. Shhhh. The grass danced until the breeze subsided, until Mia broke the silence with  a brow raised in confusion.

"What? Please repeat yourself. I couldn't hear you."

What did he say? The brunette really could not decipher what Ace had just stated since she had been absorbed in her little world of admiration before so. It was probably a trivial matter. Maybe the young male needed to rush her since it was already getting late. Because everybody else was already cozy at home, and as a girl, she shouldn't be out on the streets too long. It was what she assumed to be the case, and by asking him to say it once more, Mia hoped to confirm it . . . even though . . with what he really said . . it would have sounded conceited for him to repeat. Realizing this, Ace raised a brow as well, the playful grin turning into a playful smile as he looked to the side, at the lights, before shrugging his shoulders teasingly, the breeze ruffling his hair. The glow of the city only served to bring out the glow of his own ruby gemstones for eyes.

"I said, you look pretty when you smile."

He spoke louder this time, clearer,  not even sparing a glance at Mia until the end of his sentence, when he faced to give the brunette his full attention. Ace had no qualms about repeating himself. He wasn't the type to leave a compliment unknown to someone who deserved it, and if he believed someone had a gorgeous feature about them, the young male always had to blurt it out. It was one of his many charms known throughout the school. Mia was fully aware of this. Even she let herself be the recipient of Rachel's constant gossip about the superstar athlete. Day in and day out, watching the young male do whatever sport at lunch-time gave Mia the basics of what this male could do. And, since she never was the type to let such charms get to her, the young girl only let a silence pass before scoffing at the compliment. It was a rather rude response, but it was an honest one.

"Thank you then, if that is what you think."

Mia clicked the heels of her shoes, and turned around to resume her walk, Ace chuckling to himself a bit before running to catch up as well, the two walking side by side as they passed the shining river. After that strange moment, Ace just continued to keep talking, Mia only answering straight with his questions. It was a good start, since the young male wanted them to at least make proper conversation later on. A few cold breezes blew by, so he stuck close to Mia, hoping that would at least keep her warm (he didn't dare touch her, since she would probably move away). If needed, he would lend his sweater, with the assumption that she would accept his help. It had now been fully dark. The sky served as the tapestry embroidered with glittering, dotted lights. Since Mia didn't need to cross the bridge to get to the city as of yet (she lived in the quiet neighborhood on the side they were on), so they were able to walk into the area without any trouble.

"What's your favorite color?"
"Red."
"Mine's red too! Horoscope?"
"I don't know. I usually don't believe in that sort of thing."
"Ah. That's fine . . Favorite food?"
" . . . Rolled Egg."
"Mine's Yakisoba. Favorite Song?"
" . . . I don't listen to music that often."
"Oh. I see."

Conversation continued that way as they turned a corner from the path on the bridge, and passed by quiet streets, lit brightly by the streetlights lined orderly on the walkways. There were barely any cars passing by due to their constant presence on the other side . . in the hustle and bustle of the city. This was the quiet part of town. Life only began on the other side at this hour, while that concept seemed to find rest at this time here. Shops were still open, although some were ready to close down in a few hours. The two students walked by silently without other people bothering them . . since most were at home. Anyone who had been walking to their place now would most likely be coming home from a part-time job. The sky was clearer here due to the moderate lighting . .  especially when they crossed one of the streets to enter one of the neighborhoods. There were barely any lights there. The stars seemed to be lighting the path for them. Houses were like dark shadows acting as walls from each side, unless there was a cross section.

"We'll stop here."

Ace halted as Mia stopped and turned around in one of those cross-sections. He glanced around, hoping to get a glimpse of the place, only to garner the brunette's suspicion. Mia was not going to let him see where she lived. It was only a few blocks to the right, but he didn't need to be aware of such information. And Ace, seeing seeing such thoughts reflected in her eyes, only sighed and composed a smile.

"I want to ask something before you go." he quietly began, glancing up at the sky.
