I

I

A Story by Van

Darkness made the night. I could not see anything. I could not feel anything. I had nothing.

I lost everything after she left. The last I saw of her was her back as she walked away from me. She was white as the snow that lightly fell on her shoulders as she took her leave from my life. Forever.

            “I…”

All I could do was watch her go. My heart broke into a thousand pieces that night " the glass flying outward and away like the shards of a broken mirror. My heart broke. My soul bled. My dreams of a future turned to ash.

“I…”

Yet, even as she walked away, I reached for her; my mind, unwilling to accept the possibility of a tomorrow without her. I had fallen on my knees when she said goodbye, but now, my brain was forcing my legs to stand. Run after her. Stop her. It was telling me. I cannot live without her.

I stood up; my legs, unsteadily trying to keep me upright. I stumbled after her - running, falling, then running again. Finally, I grasped her hand by the curve. The empty street threatened my heart with so much impending loneliness and darkness; I barely had the strength to stand; I barely even heard what she said. I could only mumble the same line at her over and over and over. Don’t leave me.

Most of what happened has become quite blurry in my mind. But I remember quite clearly that one moment when she pushed away from me; turning away so quickly that I could feel the soft gust of wind fanned by her long locks as I fell. She ran.

My mind blanked out as I fell. For a short moment, all I saw was the fierce dark night and the pure snow that glowed like starlight in it.

The squeal of tires brought me back to my senses. Suddenly, my legs were steady and I righted myself in the same instant that my eyes fell witness to the event. Look out!

“I…”

The man ran towards her, desperately calling for her to answer. Hey! Hey! Are you alright? He gently shook her; trying to wake her; trying to see if she was fine.

“I…”

I couldn’t move. I could see the blood flowing down her face as if she were crying. The man took out his phone and called for an ambulance. He ran to his car and took out a shirt. He tried his best to stem the bleeding from her head as I watched dumbly from the side. I couldn’t move.

“I killed her.”
