She Wears Black

She Wears Black

A Poem by Rachika Evelyn Fauz

Stemmed from the victory of fame they emerged.
They stood on mountains high enough to touch the sky.
Their leader as beauty would be seen.
Tall slender, the face of ivory with the skin of ebony.

She stood tall and proud,
Smiled a chi dike smile
But looked upon them all with
The gaze of the street cat on the prowl, hungry for a million days.
She marched on with her battalion full of her kind,
Strong and mighty, yet gentle and meek.
They stood in numbers greater than the world has seen.

And then came the man.

Oh! The horrid creature was bathed in sweat and grime.
Uncouth unruly, he marched with marshed feet.
Bothering not of who, how or when.

The armies fought, one civilized one barbaric.

Oh! Heavens did cry for clearly
She should win, But man
Oh! The disgusting man.
He ate her up, bathed her
In his scent and she submerged.
Now today you see her,
Dressed in black,
The say ‘tis the sign of modesty.
I say she mourns for our leaders, years ago
Who fought and conquered the unruly mans heart.
